A Hybrid Key Generation and a Verification Scheme

Güneş Karabulut Kurt, Yalda Khosroshahi, Enver Ozdemır +2 more

By introducing high randomness with reduced computational cost, physical layer (PHY) key generation is one of the candidate tools that can be used for the security of the Internet of Things applications. Nonidentical secret keys are one of the main problems of the physical layer (PHY) key generation schemes. In order to address this problem, key verification schemes, which are based on information reconciliation, are used in this article. In the current key verification techniques, the legitimate nodes reveal some information related to their secret keys to eliminate nonidentical bits. In this article, by jointly using PHY key generation with an embedded key, we propose a hybrid key generation and key verification scheme, where the revealed information during the key verification process is negligible, and the verified keys are identical. Numerical results and software-defined radio-based tests show that the proposed verification scheme achieves the requirements of the Industrial Internet of Things systems.

RSS-AoA-Based Physical Layer Secret Key Generation for Mobile Wireless Nodes

Xiaohui Shang, Aijun Liu, Hao Yin +2 more

For the future Internet of Things (IoT) with ubiquitous wireless connectivity, the physical layer secret key (PLSK) scheme has been recognized as an effective and lightweight way to achieve secure communications by exploiting the reciprocity of the wireless channel. Compared with channel state information (CSI)-based PLSK generation schemes, received signal strength (RSS)-based schemes are more advantageous in terms of the communication costs and mobility for the IoT applications. However, due to the vulnerability of predictable channel attacks, RSS-based schemes cannot always guarantee perfect security. In this paper, we combine angle of arrival (AoA) and received signal strength (RSS) to generate physical layer secret key (PLSK). In particular, we propose a novel measurement named effective key generation rate (EKGR) to comprehensively and directly evaluate a PLSK scheme. Meanwhile, we further simplify the conventional PLSK generation steps to meet the low-complexity demand of IoT devices. At last, numerical results demonstrate that comparing with RSS-based and AoA-based schemes, our proposed EKGR of the RSS-AoA-based scheme achieves 78% or even 120% performance improvement.

RIS-Assisted Physical Layer Key Generation and Transmit Power Minimization

Liang Jin, Xiaodong Xu, Shujun Han +3 more

Key generation rate and bit disagreement ratio are two main indicators to evaluate the performance of physical layer key generation (PLKG). This work explores the key generation performance in reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted PLKG, where a concrete scheme of key generation is proposed. Specifically, we first deduce the key generation rate expression based on estimation theory in RIS-assisted PLKG. Then we optimize the RIS reflecting coefficients with instantaneous channel state information to maximize the key generation rate. Finally, aiming at minimizing transmit power while guaranteeing key generation rate target, we formulate a power minimization problem in RIS-assisted PLKG. An alternating optimization algorithm is applied to solve the non-convex mixed-integer nonlinear programming. Simulation results demonstrate that the key generation rate of the proposed scheme is up to 197.5% higher than the existing relay-assisted scheme, and we successfully reduce the required transmit power by at least 6.6 dBm than without power minimization scheme.
