Generation of photons on demand using cavity quantum electrodynamics

HERBERT WALTHER

Published Feb 2, 2005• 14 citations

Abstract

Abstract The paper gives a survey on recent experiments on the deterministic generation of photons. Experiments using Rydberg atoms in microwave cavities and trapped ions in optical cavities are discussed. The latter experiments show that lasers on the basis of single atoms are possible.

The deterministic generation of photons by cavity quantum electrodynamics

HERBERT WALTHER

Abstract The paper reviews the work on cavity quantum electrodynamics performed in our laboratory using the one‐atom maser and the single ion trap laser. Furthermore a brief survey on other cavity quantum electrodynamic experiments using single atoms is given in order to show the large variety of problems which can be investigated with this kind of systems.

The Deterministic Generation of Photons

HERBERT WALTHER

Applications in quantum information and quantum cryptography require radiation sources capable of producing photons in a deterministic way. This paper reviews experiments using cavity quantum electrodynamics directed towards this aim and performed in our laboratory. Two methods will be described. One uses the one-atom maser, and the other, trapped ions in an optical cavity. In order to generate photons on demand, the one-atom maser operates under the condition of the so-called trapping states. In this situation the field of the micromaser stabilizes to photon number states. Thus, the quantum states of the radiation field become directly visible. Hence, the one-atom maser is the only experiment to show a spectrum of photon quantum states. In the second experiment, the strong localization and position control achievable in an ion trap is combined with an optical cavity in a cavity quantum electrodynamic experiment leading to a big step forward towards a deterministic photon source in the visible spectral region.

Deterministic Single-Photon Generation by Cavity QED

Kazuhiro Hayasaka

Deterministic generation of single photons is an essential ingredient for quantum information experiments. Controlled emission of single photons into a cavity mode with high efficiency is proposed using a coupled system of an atom and a cavity. This paper reports theoretical discussions on single-photon generation by cavity quantum electrodynamics (Cavity QED) as well as recent progress in experiments with atoms and ions.

Generation of photon number states on demand

HERBERT WALTHER

Experiments with single atoms have become routine. In this paper two groups of these experiments will be reviewed with special emphasis on applications to study quantum phenomena in the atom-radiation interaction. The first one deals with the one-atom maser and the second one with another cavity quantum electrodynamic device on the basis of trapped ions. The latter device has interesting applications in quantum computing and quantum information.

We review recent experiments with single atoms strongly coupled to high-finesse optical cavities, highlighting deterministic schemes for the production of polarized single photons, the generation of an entanglement between a stationary atom and a flying photon, the mapping of a quantum state from an atom onto a photon, the emission of an entangled photon pair, and the generation of an up-to-half-a-minute long stream of single photons from one-and-the-same atom.
