Universality of the dynamic characteristic relationship between the characteristic time t c and the two-electron Coulomb interaction energy V ¯ 12 of the ground state in the two-photon double ionization process is investigated via changing the parameters of the two-electron atomic system and the corresponding laser conditions. The numerical results show that the product t c V ¯ 12 keeps constant around 4.1 in the cases of changing the nucleus charge, the electron charge, the electron mass, and changing simultaneously the nucleus charge and the electron charge. These results demonstrate that the dynamic characteristic relationship in the two-photon double ionization process is universal. This work sheds more light on the dynamic characteristic relationship in ultrafast processes and may find its application in measurements of attosecond pulses.
We investigate the two-photon double ionization of beryllium atom induced by ultrashort pulses. We use a time-dependent formalism to evaluate the ionization amplitudes and generalized cross sections for the ejection of the
2s2 valence shell electrons in the presence of a fully occupied
1s2 frozen core shell. The relative contributions of the two-photon direct and sequential process are systematically explored by varying both pulse duration and central frequency. The energy and angular differential ionization yields reveal the signatures of both mechanisms, as well as the role of electron correlation in both the single and double ionization continua. In contrast with previous results on the helium atom, the presence of an electronic core strongly affects the final state leading to back-to-back electron emission even in the a priori less correlated two-photon sequential mechanism. In particular, a dominant pathway via excitation ionization through the
Be+(2p) determines the profiles and pulse-duration dependencies of the energy and angle differential yields.
We analyze in this paper the process of double-electron ejection through two-photon absorption from the fundamental state of helium. We focus on the case of photon energies close to 2 a.u., which marks the threshold between direct and sequential double-ionization regimes. We demonstrate the crucial role of two-photon excitation-plus-ionization process of ${\mathit{nlk}}^{\ensuremath{'}}{l}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ Rydberg series. We show that the latter channel must be taken into account in the theory in order to properly describe two-electron ejection. A simple expression is derived for the electron energy spectrum, leading to better insights into the physics underlying two-photon absorption close to the sequential threshold.
When an atom is driven by a laser field with a photon energy that is nearly resonant with an atomic transition, it can undergo periodic population transfers between the ground and excited state, known as Rabi oscillations [1], [2]. The aim of this work is to study photoionization from atoms for parameters accessible to a free-electron laser (FEL) [3]. Using time dependent perturbation theory to model photoionization from a Rabi oscillating atom, we have shown that in addition to the expected pathway of ionization from the excited state, non-resonant two-photon ionization will have a comparable amplitude at intensities on the order of 1013W/cm2[3].
With quantum calculations, we have investigated the multiphoton nonsequential double ionization of helium atoms in intense laser fields at ultraviolet wavelengths. Very surprisingly, we found a so-far unobserved double-circle structure in the correlated electron momentum spectra. The double-circle structure essentially reveals multiphoton Rabi oscillations of two electrons, which are strongly supported by the oscillating population of a certain doubly excited state and by the oscillating double ionization signals. This two-electron multiphoton Rabi effect provides a profound understanding of electronic correlations and complicated multiphoton phenomena and is expected to be a new tool for broad applications, such as quantum coherent control.
The two-photon resonance ionization probability of atoms in strong extreme-ultraviolet free-electron laser (EUV FEL) pulses has been investigated by the model of time-dependent wave packet propagation of a light-coupled multilevel atom. Under the simulation within the model assuming single-mode FEL pulses, the ionization probability
Pion has shown characteristic dependences on the scaled coupling parameter
Ugi between two levels of the ground (
g) and intermediate (
i) resonance states, namely, ${P}_{\mathrm{ion}}\ensuremath{\propto}{({U}_{gi})}^{n}$, with
n being equal to \ensuremath{\sim}2, less than 1, and \ensuremath{\sim}1 for the small, medium, and large
Ugi regimes, respectively. This power dependence of the ionization probability has been interpreted due to Rabi oscillations between
g and
i states. To compare with recent experimental results on the same condition, the multimode nature of self-amplitude spontaneous emission (SASE) FEL pulses has been managed in the simulation. Then, the recent experimental laser-power dependence of the two-photon resonance ionization of He [Sato et al., J. Phys. B 44, 161001 (2011)] has been well described by that for the large
Ugi regime of the simulation, i.e.,
n \ensuremath{\sim} 1. Thus, the observed linear laser-power dependence has been rationalized as being caused by the strong Rabi oscillations between the (2
p)--(1
s) states.
