Abstract

The two-photon resonance ionization probability of atoms in strong extreme-ultraviolet free-electron laser (EUV FEL) pulses has been investigated by the model of time-dependent wave packet propagation of a light-coupled multilevel atom. Under the simulation within the model assuming single-mode FEL pulses, the ionization probability ${P}_{\mathrm{ion}}$ has shown characteristic dependences on the scaled coupling parameter ${U}_{gi}$ between two levels of the ground ($g$) and intermediate ($i$) resonance states, namely, ${P}_{\mathrm{ion}}\ensuremath{\propto}{({U}_{gi})}^{n}$, with $n$ being equal to \ensuremath{\sim}2, less than 1, and \ensuremath{\sim}1 for the small, medium, and large ${U}_{gi}$ regimes, respectively. This power dependence of the ionization probability has been interpreted due to Rabi oscillations between $g$ and $i$ states. To compare with recent experimental results on the same condition, the multimode nature of self-amplitude spontaneous emission (SASE) FEL pulses has been managed in the simulation. Then, the recent experimental laser-power dependence of the two-photon resonance ionization of He [Sato et al., J. Phys. B 44, 161001 (2011)] has been well described by that for the large ${U}_{gi}$ regime of the simulation, i.e., $n$ \ensuremath{\sim} 1. Thus, the observed linear laser-power dependence has been rationalized as being caused by the strong Rabi oscillations between the (2$p$)--(1$s$) states.

Photoionization of resonantly driven atomic states by an extreme ultraviolet-free-electron laser: intensity dependence and renormalization of Rabi frequencies

Benjamin Kaiser, A Brand, Martin Glässl +3 more

We analyze theoretically the high intensity photoionization dynamics of a system with two atomic states resonantly coupled by coherent extreme ultraviolet laser radiation that also gives rise to the ionization. The ground state occupation of such a system is shown to exhibit damped Rabi oscillations. The corresponding ionization, which is responsible for the damping, scales almost linearly with the field intensity when the pulse length exceeds the Rabi period. For shorter pulses a quadratic scaling is found. The Rabi frequency is shifted compared to its value for an isolated two-level system. The shift increases with excitation intensity and can acquire a high percentage of the unrenormalized frequency at high intensities. Analytical results obtained within a simplified solvable model demonstrate that the damping and the shift both result from the coupling of the discrete states to the ionization continuum and are therefore closely related. Numerical simulations for a two-electron system reveal at high intensities the importance of off-resonant ionization channels.

Coherent Control of Ion-Photoelectron Dynamics through Rabi Oscillations: An ab initio study

Shen, Bo-Ren, Yi-Jia Mao, Zhaohan Zhang +4 more

We present first-principles numerical simulations of photoionization in neon induced by bichromatic extreme ultraviolet pulses with frequencies $ω$ and $2ω$, specially chosen to make $ω$ equal to the energy difference between the $2s$ and $2p$ subshells. This allows for the production of photoelectrons from the $2s$ shell by $2ω$ pulse and from the $2p$ shell by $ω$ pulse with the same energy. Using the multi-configurational time-dependent Hartree-Fock method, we explore how Rabi coupling between subshells generates coherence between the corresponding photoelectron wave packets. Our \textit{ab initio} calculations confirm the analytical results derived from the essential-states approach in [K. L. Ishikawa, K. C. Prince, and K. Ueda, J. Phys. Chem. A 127, 10638 (2023)], validating the theoretical predictions. Although we focus on the Ne $2p$ and $2s$ subshells, our approach is applicable to a broad range of systems exhibiting photoionization from multiple subshells. The laser parameters employed in our simulations are available in modern Free Electron Lasers (FELs), and we anticipate that this work could stimulate experimental investigations using FELs to study ion-photoelectron coherence and entanglement.

Photoelectron Signatures of Nonperturbative Dynamics in Resonant Two-Photon Ionization of Helium

Edvin Olofsson, Jan Marcus Dahlström

When an atom is driven by a laser field with a photon energy that is nearly resonant with an atomic transition, it can undergo periodic population transfers between the ground and excited state, known as Rabi oscillations [1], [2]. The aim of this work is to study photoionization from atoms for parameters accessible to a free-electron laser (FEL) [3]. Using time dependent perturbation theory to model photoionization from a Rabi oscillating atom, we have shown that in addition to the expected pathway of ionization from the excited state, non-resonant two-photon ionization will have a comparable amplitude at intensities on the order of 1013W/cm2[3].

Single-atom response of helium atoms to pulses from an EUV free-electron laser: Implications for the subsequent development of superfluorescence

James Robert Harries, Chiaki Ohae, Susumu Kuma +8 more

Using multilevel (161-level) numerical simulations beyond the rotating-wave approximation, we investigate the single-atom response of helium to intense pulses of radiation with properties characteristic of a self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) free-electron laser (FEL) source, and central wavelengths resonant with $1snp$ excitation ($n=3$,4). The results show a complete breakdown of the two-level approximation and suggest that, under typical experimental conditions, levels other than the resonant level are significantly populated. We discuss the implications for the subsequent development of superfluorescence (a collective effect) from the excited atomic medium and compare the results to recent experiments.

Rabi oscillations in extreme ultraviolet ionization of atomic argon

Martin Flögel, Judith Durá, Bernd Schütte +3 more

We demonstrate Rabi oscillations in nonlinear ionization of argon by an intense femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) laser field produced by high-harmonic generation. We monitor the formation of $\mathrm{A}{\mathrm{r}}^{2+}$ as a function of the time delay between the XUV pulse and an additional near-infrared (NIR) femtosecond laser pulse, and show that the population of an $\mathrm{A}{\mathrm{r}}^{+*}$ intermediate resonance exhibits strong modulations both due to an NIR laser-induced Stark shift and XUV-induced Rabi cycling between the ground state of $\mathrm{A}{\mathrm{r}}^{+}$ and the $\mathrm{A}{\mathrm{r}}^{+*}$ excited state. Our experiment represents a direct experimental observation of a Rabi-cycling process in the XUV regime.

Nonresonant EUV-UV two-color two-photon ionization of He studied by single-shot photoelectron spectroscopy

Mizuho Fushitani, Y. Hikosaka, Akitaka Matsuda +8 more

Single-shot photoelectron spectroscopy of nonresonant two-color two-photon ionization of He has been carried out using an intense free-electron laser (FEL) at 59.7 nm and a femtosecond UV laser at 268 nm. By shot-by-shot analysis of photoelectron spectra, the cross section for nonresonant two-color ionization of He is determined to be ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{(2)}=4.1(6)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}52}$ cm${}^{4}$ s. The cross-correlation trace derived from the nonresonant signals shows that the temporal resolution of the system is 0.36(3) ps, which is mainly governed by the timing jitter between the FEL and UV laser pulses.
