Dissipation in spin chains using quantized nonequilibrium thermodynamics

Abstract

We investigate the open dynamics of a chain of interacting spins using the quantized version of the general equation for the nonequilibrium reversible-irreversible coupling equation from classical out-of-equilibrium thermodynamics. We focus on both equilibrium and nonequilibrium scenarios for chains of different sizes. Whereas in the equilibrium case we demonstrate thermal equilibration to the correct many-body Gibbs density matrix, in the nonequilibrium dynamics we show a ballistic-to-diffusive transition in the steady-state energy current and a scaling that is consistent with Fourier's law of heat transfer.

Nonequilibrium spin transport in integrable spin chains: Persistent currents and emergence of magnetic domains

Andrea De Luca, Mario Collura, Jacopo De Nardis

The nonequilibrium dynamics of isolated many-body quantum systems leads generically to the emergence of standard thermal ensembles. However, some models, denoted as integrable, can display nontrivial steady states with a large memory of the initial state. This is due to the presence of conserved quantities constraining the unitary dynamics. Here, the authors show that in interacting integrable spin chains there exist also conserved operators that are responsible for ballistic spin transport. Such conserved operators highly influence both the equilibrium and nonequilibrium physics: at equilibrium they are responsible for a nonvanishing spin Drude weight even at half filling, while in the nonequilibrium case they are responsible for out-of-equilibrium steady states characterized by persistent spin currents or dynamically expanding magnetic domains.

Thermally driven classical Heisenberg model in one dimension

Debarshee Bagchi, P. K. Mohanty

We study thermal transport in a classical one-dimensional Heisenberg model employing a discrete-time odd-even precessional update scheme. This dynamics equilibrates a spin chain for any arbitrary temperature and finite value of the integration time step $\ensuremath{\Delta}t$. We rigorously show that in presence of driving, the system attains local thermal equilibrium, which is a strict requirement of Fourier law. In the thermodynamic limit, heat current for such a system obeys Fourier law for all temperatures, as has been recently shown [A. V. Savin, G. P. Tsironis, and X. Zotos, Phys. Rev. B 72, 140402(R) (2005)]. Finite systems, however, show an apparent ballistic transport which crosses over to a diffusive one as the system size is increased. We provide exact results for current and energy profiles in zero- and infinite-temperature limits.

Nonequilibrium thermal transport in the quantum Ising chain

Andrea De Luca, Jacopo Viti, Denis Bernard +1 more

We consider two quantum Ising chains initially prepared at thermal equilibrium but with different temperatures and coupled at a given time through one of their end points. In the long-time limit the system reaches a nonequilibrium steady state. We discuss properties of this nonequilibrium steady state and characterize the convergence to the steady regime. We compute the mean energy flux through the chain and show that the heat transport is ballistic. We derive also the large-deviation function for the quantum and thermal fluctuations of this energy transfer.

Exact solution for a diffusive nonequilibrium steady state of an open quantum chain

Marko Žnidarič

We calculate a nonequilibrium steady state of a quantum XX chain in the presence of dephasing and driving due to baths at chain ends. The obtained state is exact in the limit of weak driving while the expressions for one- and two-point correlations are exact for an arbitrary driving strength. In the steady state the magnetization profile and the spin current display diffusive behavior. The spin–spin correlation function, on the other hand, has long-range correlations which, though, decay to zero in either the thermodynamical limit or for equilibrium driving. At zero dephasing a nonequilibrium phase transition occurs from a ballistic transport having short-range correlations to a diffusive transport with long-range correlations.

Heat transport in an open transverse-field Ising chain

Kewei Sun, Chen Wang, Qing‐Hu Chen

The heat conduction in an open transverse-field Ising chain is studied by using quantization in the Fock space of operators in the weak-coupling regimes, i.e. the coupling is much smaller than the transverse field. The non-equilibrium steady state is obtained for large-size systems coupled to Markovian baths at its ends. The ballistic transport is observed in the uniform chain and normal diffusion in the random exchange chain. In addition, the ballistic-diffusive transition is found at the intermediate disorder regime. The thermal conductivity κ is also calculated in the low- and high-temperature regimes. It is shown that κ decays as κ∼ T −2 at high temperatures.
