Abstract

We study spin-nematic squeezing in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate and use it to probe dynamical quantum phase transitions. We show that the quench dynamics of the spin-nematic squeezing exhibits a nonanalytical change with respect to a final quadratic Zeeman energy, and demonstrate that the squeezing detects not only the ground state phase diagram, but also the excited state quantum phase transition. We further analyze the dynamic stabilization of the system and present its relation to the dynamical quantum phase transitions. Our results are applicable to the spinor condensates with both of the sodium and rubidium atoms.

Atomic Number Fluctuations in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate with Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions

Yaming Li, Yi Ding, Jianning Liu +1 more

We study atomic number fluctuations in a spinor Bose–Einstein condensate and use it to characterize behaviors of dynamical quantum phase transitions. We observe that the quench dynamics of the atomic number fluctuations exhibit a nonanalytical change with respect to a parameter in the final Hamiltonian and demonstrate that the atomic number fluctuations can be used to detect both the ground state phase diagram and the highest energy state quantum phase transition. We further analyze the dynamics of atomic number fluctuations for finite magnetization and show that the quantum fluctuations could also be used to probe the phase transitions of the highest energy level and the ground state.

Observation of dynamical quantum phase transitions in a spinor condensate

H.-X. Yang, Tonghua Tian, Yan-Bin Yang +7 more

A dynamical quantum phase transition can be characterized by a nonanalytic change in the quench dynamics when a parameter in the governing Hamiltonian is varied. Such a transition typically only shows up in long-time dynamics for extensive systems with short-range couplings. We analyze a model Hamiltonian of spin-1 particles with effectively infinite-range couplings and demonstrate that for this system the nonanalytic transition occurs for local observables in short-time durations even when the system is of a large size. We experimentally realize this model Hamiltonian and observe the dynamical quantum phase transition in an antiferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate of around ${10}^{5}$ sodium atoms. Our observations agree well with the theoretical prediction. We also analyze the scaling exponent near the dynamical phase transition and discuss its relation with the excited-state spectrum of the system.

Observation of Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions with Correspondence in an Excited State Phase Diagram

Tonghua Tian, H.-X. Yang, L.-Y. Qiu +4 more

Dynamical quantum phase transitions are closely related to equilibrium quantum phase transitions for ground states. Here, we report an experimental observation of a dynamical quantum phase transition in a spinor condensate with correspondence in an excited state phase diagram, instead of the ground state one. We observe that the quench dynamics exhibits a nonanalytical change with respect to a parameter in the final Hamiltonian in the absence of a corresponding phase transition for the ground state there. We make a connection between this singular point and a phase transition point for the highest energy level in a subspace with zero spin magnetization of a Hamiltonian. We further show the existence of dynamical phase transitions for finite magnetization corresponding to the phase transition of the highest energy level in the subspace with the same magnetization. Our results open a door for using dynamical phase transitions as a tool to probe physics at higher energy eigenlevels of many-body Hamiltonians.

Dynamic Stabilization of a Quantum Many-Body Spin System

Thai M. Hoang, Corey Gerving, Benjamin Land +3 more

We demonstrate dynamic stabilization of a strongly interacting quantum spin system realized in a spin-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The spinor Bose-Einstein condensate is initialized to an unstable fixed point of the spin-nematic phase space, where subsequent free evolution gives rise to squeezing and quantum spin mixing. To stabilize the system, periodic microwave pulses are applied that rotate the spin-nematic many-body fluctuations and limit their growth. The stability diagram for the range of pulse periods and phase shifts that stabilize the dynamics is measured and compares well with a stability analysis.

Critically enhanced spin-nematic squeezing and entanglement in dipolar spinor condensates

Qing-Shou Tan, Yixiao Huang, Qiongtao Xie +1 more

We study the quantum critical effect enhanced spin-nematic squeezing and quantum Fisher information (QFI) in the spin-1 dipolar atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that the quantum phase transitions can improve the squeezing and QFI in the nearby regime of the critical point, and the Heisenberg-limited high-precision metrology can be obtained. The different properties of the ground squeezing and entanglement under even and odd number of atoms are further analyzed, by calculating the exact analytical expressions. We also demonstrate the squeezing and entanglement generated by the spin-mixing dynamics around the phase-transition point. It is shown that the steady squeezing and entanglement can be obtained, and the Bogoliubov approximation can well describe the dynamics of spin-nematic squeezed vacuum state.

Spin-Nematic Squeezing in a Quantum Gas

Christopher D. Hamley, Corey Gerving, Thai M. Hoang +2 more

Exotic types of magnetic order and phases resulting from collective behaviour of quantum spins are an important focus of many-body physics. Nematic or quadrupolar ordering of spins is one such example [1], which breaks O(3) rotational symmetry, has no magnetic moment and is analogous to the well-known ordering of molecules in nematic phases of liquid crystals [2]. Spin nematic phases have been posited for a variety of condensed matter systems including frustrated quantum magnets [3–5], and heavyfermion [6] and iron-based superconductors [7], although they are challenging to detect directly [8]. Spin-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensates [9– 11] provide a natural system to investigate spinnematic quantum phases with a key advantage that the nematic tensor is directly measurable. Here, we measure spin-nematic fluctuations in a spin-1 condensate following a quench through a nematic to ferromagnetic quantum phase transition and observe quadrature squeezing in the variance of the fluctuations up to −8.3 −0.7 dB (−10.3 −0.9 dB corrected for detection noise) below the standard quantum limit. Previous work in atomic squeezing has employed two-level systems exhibiting SU(2) symmetry on the Bloch sphere [12, 13], while the squeezing observed here is an example of squeezing in an SU(3) system. These results demonstrate spin-nematic dynamics in the quantum regime and could form the basis of a quantum-enhanced magnetometer.
