Abstract

Abstract In this letter, we theoretical investigated electromagnetically induced phase grating in a three-level quantum system. The quantum system interacts with two weak probe and signal lights and a strong coupling light. We show that in two different parametric conditions i.e. in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler–Townes splitting (ATS) regimes, the probe and signal beams can be diffracted into the high-order directions. We realized that in the EIT regime, some of probe energy transfer from zero order to the high orders, while in ATS regime most of probe energy transfers to the high orders and small portion remain in the zero order.

Incoherent control of electromagnetically induced transparency and Aulter-Townes splitting

Chang‐Ling Zou, Yan‐Lei Zhang, Liang Jiang +2 more

The absorption and dispersion of probe light is studied in an unified framework of three-level system, with coherent laser driving and incoherent pumping and relaxation. The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS) are studied in details. In the phase diagram of the unified three-level system, there are distinct parameter regimes corresponding to different lineshapes and mechanisms, and the incoherent transition could control the cross-over between EIT and ATS. The incoherent control of the three-level system enables the investigation of various phenomena in quantum optics, and is beneficial for experiments of light-matter interactions.

Mixture of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Autler–Townes Splitting in a Five-Level Atomic System*

Xiao-Yun 晓 芸 Zhang 张, Shan 山 Wu 吴, Hai‐Chao Li

Abstract Discerning electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) from Autler–Townes splitting (ATS) is a significant issue in quantum optics and has attracted wide attention in various three-level configurations. Here we present a detailed study of EIT and ATS in a five-level atomic system considered to be composed of a four-level Y-type subsystem and a three-level Λ-type subsystem. In our theoretical calculations with standard density matrix formalism and steady-state approximation, we obtain the general analytical expression of the first-order matrix element responsible for the probe-field absorption. In light of the well-known three-level EIT and ATS criteria, we numerically show an intersection of EIT with ATS for the Y-type subsystem. Furthermore, we show that an EIT dip is sandwiched between two ATS dips (i.e., multi-dip mixture of EIT and ATS) in the absorption line for the five-level system, which can be explained by the dressed-state theory and Fano interference.

Azimuthal controlling of electromagnetically induced phase grating in five-level quantum systems

Jinlan Jiang, Shuifa Shen, Dong-Biao Kang

Abstract In this paper, we suggest a theoretical model for creating a two-dimensional (2D) electromagnetically induced phase grating in a five-level quantum system interacting with a weak probe light, two coupling standing light in the x and y directions and a Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) field. By derivation of the Maxwell’s wave equation, we obtain the dynamic response of the probe light in the quantum system. Then, we perform the analytical solution of the probe susceptibility for obtaining the linear and nonlinear properties of the medium. By numerical calculations, we discuss the amplitude and phase modulations and Fraunhofer diffraction patterns of the probe light in different parametric conditions. We show that by adjusting the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of the LG light a 2D grating is observed. Moreover, we find that the probe energy can be transferred from zero order to high order of direction when we change the OAM number of LG light. Our proposed model may have potential applications in fundamental research and quantum information processing based on OAM light in quantum systems.

Phase controlling of electromagnetically induced grating

Zuge Tang, Behrad Zeinali, Sarkew Salah Abdulkareem

Abstract In this paper, we investigated electromagnetically induced grating in a three-level atomic system via relative phase between applied lights. The three-level atomic system interacts with a weak probe light, a signal light and a strong standing wave coupling light in two-dimensional directions. We realized that Fraunhofer diffraction pattern can be obtained by tuning the intensity and detuning’s of the coupling light. We also use of optical vortex light instead of optical plane wave and found that the asymmetric diffraction pattern can be obtained via orbital angular momentum (OAM), respectively. We also studied the different orders of the diffraction pattern versus relative phase of applied lights for different number of OAM.

Quantum interference manipulation and enhancement with fluctuation-correlation-induced dephasing in an atomic system

Jinze Wu, Jinhong Liu, Yanyan He +3 more

We investigate the manipulation of the quantum interference (QI) in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system via phase fluctuations and their correlation of interacting fields. We show that the field fluctuation correlation and atomic dephasing rate have a similar effect to atomic coherence, and furthermore that QI is dependent on the fluctuation and correlation. Using the theoretical model in a dressed-state representation, the contribution of QI and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS) to probe absorption can be expressed in separate terms, such that the obvious enhancement of QI is found with highly correlated fields while ATS remains unchanged. In particular, when the relative large Rabi frequency of coupling field is applied, in which case the ATS plays a more prominent role than QI, we can still modulate the QI to be higher than ATS with correlated fields. This result could allow the strict EIT condition to be relaxed and be easily realized, or it may be a method to get a narrow EIT window for applications in efficient light storage and quantum interface.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and Autler-Townes splitting: Two similar but distinct phenomena in two categories of three-level atomic systems

Tony Abi-Salloum

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes (AT) splitting are two phenomena that could be featured in a variety of three-level atomic systems. The considered phenomena, EIT and AT, are similar ``looking'' in the sense that they are both characterized by a reduction in absorption of a weak field in the presence of a stronger field. In this paper, we explicitly set the threshold of separation between EIT and AT splitting in a unified study of four different three-level atomic systems. Two resonances are studied and compared in each case. A comparison of the magnitudes of the resonances reveals two coupling-field regimes and two categories of three-level system.
