Effective modeling of physical systems with fractional statistics

Abstract

We consider two examples of real physical systems approximately described using fractional nonadditive Polychronakos statistics. The values of two statistics parameters are linked to properties of modeled systems using virial expansion. For a two-dimensional Fermi gas with contact interactions, accuracy up to the third virial coefficient is achieved. An approach to model the second virial coefficient of non-Abelian soft-core anyons is analyzed in detail.

Two-Parameter Modifications of Anyonic Statistics

M. Hornetska, Andrij A. Rovenchak

Two-parameter models of fractional statistics aimed at finding an expression for the occupation numbers of free anyons have been considered. Virial coefficients are found for statistics of several types: к-deformed Polychronakos and Haldane–Wu statistics, Polychronakos and Haldane–Wu statistics modified with the q-exponential in the bosonic limit, and incomplete and nonadditive Gentile statistics for various level-filling maxima. A relation between the anyonic statistics and various statistics of fractional types is found and analyzed.

Virial expansions, exclusion statistics, and the fractional quantum Hall effect

K. Tevosyan, Allan H. MacDonald

We report on a study of virial expansions for interacting electrons in the lowest Landau level of a two-dimensional electron gas. For hard-core-model interactions, we derive analytic results valid at low temperatures and filling factors smaller than $1/3$, and comment on their relationship with virial expansions for exclusion statistics models. In the high-temperature limit the virial coefficients reduce to those for a noninteracting electron system. For the first five virial coefficients, the crossover between low- and high-temperature limits has been studied numerically by using partition functions obtained from small system exact diagonalization calculations. Our results show that the exclusion statistics description of fractional Hall thermodynamics breaks down when the temperature exceeds a small fraction of the gap temperature.

Second virial coefficient for contact-interacting anyons

Paola Giacconi A, Fabio Maltoni B, Roberto Soldati

We study the thermodynamic properties of the anyon gas in the presence of a contact interaction. In particular, we use dimensional and analytical regularizations to calculate the second virial coefficient for free and contact-interacting anyons. The Bethe-Uhlenbeck formula is discussed and it is shown that the same result is regained using the \ensuremath{\zeta} regularization. Finally, the second virial coefficients for contact-interacting particles in two and three spatial dimensions are obtained as special cases. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Thermodynamics of a One-Dimensional Ideal Gas with Fractional Exclusion Statistics

M. V. N. Murthy, Ravi Shankar

We show that the particles in the Calogero-Sutherland model obey fractional exclusion statistics as defined by Haldane. We construct anyon number densities and derive the energy distribution function. We show that the partition function factorizes in the form characteristic of an ideal gas. The virial expansion is exactly computable and interestingly it is only the second virial coefficient that encodes the statistics information.

Weakly nonadditive Polychronakos statistics

Andrij A. Rovenchak

A two-parameter fractional statistics is proposed, which can be used to model a weakly interacting Bose system. It is shown that the parameters of the introduced weakly nonadditive Polychronakos statistics can be linked to the effects of interactions as well as to finite-size corrections. Calculations are made of the specific heat and condensate fraction of the model system corresponding to harmonically trapped Rb-87 atoms. The behavior of the specific heat of three-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillators with respect tothe statistics parameters is studied in the temperature domain including the BEC-like phase-transition point.

Quantum third virial coefficient of a fractional-statistics gas

J. Law, Akira Suzuki, R. K. Bhaduri

A quantum calculation of the third virial coefficient of a two-dimensional gas obeying fractional statistics is performed by diagonalizing the three-body Hamiltonian in a harmonic-oscillator potential with a large fermionic basis. The numerical results for the virial coefficient ${\mathit{A}}_{3}$ as a function of the flux strength \ensuremath{\alpha} (\ensuremath{\alpha}=0 for fermions, \ensuremath{\alpha}=1 for bosons) are reliable in the range 0\ensuremath{\le}\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\le}0.25. $A sub 3--- increases quadratically with \ensuremath{\alpha} for very small \ensuremath{\alpha}, but higher powers contribute substantially for large \ensuremath{\alpha}.
