Generalized photon-number-splitting attack on a coherent one-way quantum-key-distribution protocol

Ashot S. Avanesov, Dmitry Anatolevich Kronberg

Quantum key distribution (QKD) offers an unprecedented level of security, which, unlike its classical analog, is not based on computational assumptions. But tight lower and upper security bounds are still not provided for some QKD protocols. Here, we propose an effective attack strategy for coherent one-way (COW) QKD protocol. It is a generalized photon-number splitting (PNS) attack combined with sequential unambiguous state discrimination (USD) attack. We discuss the possibility of a generalized PNS attack because this attack demonstrates efficiency and does not introduce error, while previously the COW protocol was considered secure against PNS attack. To our knowledge, it is the most efficient attack on the COW protocol to date, hence we sharpen the upper security bound for this protocol.

Research of a new quantum key protocol attacked

Hongyu Zhang

A new quantum key distribution protocol that differs from the BB84 protocol is analysised.Though 1/4 redundancy codes is introduced to slow the code transmit rate, the new protocol is an astonishing simple QKD(Quantum Key Distribution) protocol, and it is much more robust against PNS(Photon Number Splitting) attack than BB84.Lots of key bits will be revealed to Eve(an eavesdropper) when she uses PNS.For application, the security of the one-time pad is also obtained when the protocol is used.

Recent development of differential-phase-shift quantum key distribution

LI He-ping

Quantum-key-distribution(QKD) has been studied as an ultimate method for secure communications. Here we review the recent progress on differential-phase shift(DPS) QKD.The principle of the DPS-QKD protocol is explained, and the security against the Photon-number splitting(PNS) and the sequential attack strategy is discussed briefly. The current application in various field and the prospect of QKD is referred.
