Superconducting quantum circuits are among the most promising solutions for the development of scalable quantum computers. Built with sizes that range from microns to tens of metres using superconducting fabrication techniques and microwave technology, superconducting circuits demonstrate distinctive quantum properties such as superposition and entanglement at cryogenic temperatures. This book provides a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the world of superconducting quantum circuits, and how they are used in current quantum technology. Beginning with a description of their basic superconducting properties, the author then explores their use in quantum systems, showing how they can emulate individual photons and atoms, and ultimately behave as qubits within highly connected quantum systems. Particular attention is paid to cutting-edge applications of these superconducting circuits in quantum computing and quantum simulation. Written for graduate students and junior researchers, this accessible text includes numerous homework problems and worked examples.

As superconducting circuits emerge as a leading platform for scalable quantum information processing, building comprehensive bridges from the foundational principles of macroscopic quantum phenomena to the architecture of modern quantum devices is increasingly essential for introducing new researchers to the field. This tutorial provides a self-contained, pedagogical introduction to superconducting quantum circuits at the undergraduate level. Beginning with an overview of superconductivity and the Josephson effect, the tutorial systematically develops the quantization of microwave circuits into the framework of circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED). The transmon qubit is then introduced as a state-of-the-art application, with a detailed derivation of its Hamiltonian and its interaction with control and readout circuitry. The theoretical formalism is consolidated through a numerical simulation of vacuum Rabi oscillations in a driven transmon-resonator system, a canonical experiment that demonstrates the coherent energy exchange characteristic of the strong coupling regime. This work serves as a foundational guide and first point of contact, equipping students and researchers with the conceptual and mathematical tools necessary to understand and engineer superconducting quantum hardware.
Build quantum computers using superconducting qubits and microwave cavity technology Creating qubits with sufficiently long coherence times remains one of the central challenges in building practical quantum computers. Quantum Computing with Superconducting Qubits and Cavities unites the latest advances in superconducting qubits, ultra-high-Q microwave cavities, and cavity–transmon architectures that are emerging as one of the leading platforms for scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computing. By combining conceptual insight with practical implementation, the book equips readers to understand not only how these systems work, but why they are at the forefront of the quantum technology revolution. The book explores quantum computation using bosonic modes, Fock states, qudits, quantum memories, and modern bosonic error-correcting codes including cat, binomial, and GKP encodings. Fundamental concepts are developed through clear physical explanations, while rigorous mathematical treatments are introduced where needed to provide a deeper understanding. Dedicated reviews of the underlying principles of quantum physics make the material accessible to newcomers without sacrificing the depth expected by researchers and practicing engineers. Quantum Computing with Superconducting Qubits and Cavities also includes: Design principles and operation of superconducting transmon qubits integrated with high-coherence microwave cavities for scalable quantum architectures. Bosonic quantum error-correction strategies that dramatically extend coherence and move quantum computing closer to fault-tolerant operation. Applications of quantum computing, including integer factoring, database searching, quantum chemistry, condensed-matter physics, and materials science simulations beyond the reach of classical computers. Materials science, fabrication methods, and surface treatments that continue to drive record improvements in qubit and cavity coherence. The global race toward quantum computing, including major international investments and the rapidly expanding role of superconducting quantum technologies. Written for physicists, materials scientists, electrical engineers, computer scientists, graduate students, and researchers entering quantum information science, this book provides both the theoretical foundation and the practical knowledge needed to engage with one of the fastest-growing fields in modern science and engineering.
The global race to build the world's first quantum computer has attracted enormous investment from government and industry, and it attracts a growing pool of talent. As with many cutting-edge technologies, the optimal implementation is not yet settled. This important textbook describes four of the most advanced platforms for quantum computing: nuclear magnetic resonance, quantum optics, trapped ions, and superconducting systems. The fundamental physical concepts underpinning the practical implementation of quantum computing are reviewed, followed by a balanced analysis of the strengths and weaknesses inherent to each type of hardware. The text includes more than 80 carefully designed exercises with worked solutions available to instructors, applied problems from key scenarios, and suggestions for further reading, facilitating a practical and expansive learning experience. Suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate students in physics, engineering, and computer science, Building Quantum Computers is an invaluable resource for this emerging field.
The ideal text for a two-semester graduate course on quantum mechanics. Fresh, comprehensive, and clear, it strikes the optimal balance between covering traditional material and exploring contemporary topics. Focusing on the probabilistic structure of quantum mechanics and the central role of symmetries to unify principles, this textbook guides readers through the logical development of the theory. Students will also learn about the more exciting and controversial aspects of quantum theory, with discussions on past interpretations and the current debates on cutting-edge concepts such as quantum information and entanglement, open quantum systems, and quantum measurement theory. The book has two types of content: Type A material is more elementary and is fully self-contained, functioning like a separate book within the book, while Type B content is at the level of a graduate course. Requiring minimal physics background, this textbook is appropriate for mathematics and engineering students, in addition to physicists. Introducing cutting-edge topics in the field, the book features about 150 concept-checking questions, 300 homework problems and a solutions manual.
Superconducting circuits based on Josephson junctions can exhibit macroscopic quantum coherence.Quantum computation with superconducting circuits is one of the most important research directions in the field of quantum information. Moreover, the study of the physical properties of superconducting circuits is an interdisciplinary area of both condensed matter physics and quantum optics.A brief overview is presented of the main results and advancements achieved so far,as well as future prospects,in the area of superconducting quantum computation.
Already in the first edition of this book [ 1 ], a great number of interesting and important applications for Josephson junctions were discussed. In the decades that have passed since then, several new applications have emerged. This chapter treats one such new class of applications: quantum optics and quantum information processing (QIP) based on superconducting circuits with Josephson junctions. At the time of writing, the most recent and comprehensive reviews of this field, which has grown rapidly in the past two decades, are [ 2 , 3 ]. We also recommend the reviews in [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ] for additional perspectives on the field. In this chapter, we aim to explain the basics of superconducting quantum circuits with Josephson junctions and demonstrate how these systems open up new prospects, both for QIP and for the study of quantum optics and atomic physics.
