Abstract

Abstract We investigate the phase diagram of a spin-1 ferromagnetic XY model in the presence of a longitudinal easy-axis crystal field assuming bilinear (J) and biquadratic (I) exchange interactions between nearest neighbors spins and using the two-time Green Functions framework at the level of the Devlin strategy. Employing both analytical estimates and numerical calculations, we find that the structure of the crystal-field-induced phase boundary changes sensibly as the ratio $$\alpha = I/J$$ α = I / J increases. In particular, when $$\alpha $$ α overcomes a characteristic value $$\alpha ^*$$ α ∗ , two quantum critical points appear which are connected by a dome-shaped critical line. Due to the paradigmatic nature of the anisotropic spin model here considered, we believe that our findings may provide useful insights into the physical origin of recent experimental results found for some innovative materials which exhibit two quantum critical points and dome-shaped phase diagrams induced by non-thermal control parameters driving a non-conventional quantum criticality. Magnetic-field-induced quantum criticality in a planar ferromagnet with single-ion anisotropy

Maria Teresa Mercaldo, Ileana Rabuffo, L. De Cesare +1 more

We analyze the effects induced by single-ion anisotropy on quantum criticality in a d -dimensional spin-3/2 planar ferromagnet. To tackle this problem we employ the two-time Green's function method, using the Tyablikov decoupling for exchange interactions and the Anderson-Callen decoupling for single-ion anisotropy. In our analysis the role of non-thermal control parameter which drives the quantum phase transition is played by a longitudinal external magnetic field. We find that the single-ion anisotropy has substantial effects on the structure of the phase diagram close to the quantum critical point.

Blume-Emery-Griffiths-Potts model in two dimensions: Phase diagram and critical properties from a position-space renormalization group

A. Nihat Berker, Michael Wortis

The spin-1 Ising model on the square lattice with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange interactions [both bilinear ($J$) and biquadratic ($K$) and crystal-field interaction ($\ensuremath{\Delta}$) is studied via a renormalization-group transformation in position space. The phase diagram in $J$, $K$, $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ space is found to have one surface of critical phase transitions and two surfaces of first-order phase transitions. These surfaces are variously bounded by an ordinary tricritical line, an isolated critical line, and a line of critical end points. These three lines joint at a special tricritical point corresponding to the transition of the three-state Potts model. The over-all phase diagram is qualitatively similar to that obtained with the mean-field approximation, except in the vicinity of the Potts transition where a four-phase coexistence line in mean-field theory shrinks into a special tricritical point in renormalization-group theory. Symmetry considerations guide the construction of our truncated renormalization-group transformation. The global connectivity and local exponents of the thirteen separate fixed points underlying this quite complicated structure are determined. Local analysis with respect to magnetic field ($H$) and another odd interaction ($L$) is performed. A one-adjusted-parameter version of our transformation yields remarkably quantitative results, predicting the Potts transition temperature, for example, within 0.3% of the exact value.

Phase diagram and quantum criticality of a non-Hermitian XY model with a complex transverse field

Jinghui Pi, Rong Lü

model with a complex transverse field, where the imaginary transverse field can be generated by three-level atoms with spontaneous decay. Many-body spectrum can be obtained analytically. The phase diagram in thermodynamical limit indicates that the imaginary transverse field induces non-Hermitian degeneracy and shrinks the ferromagnetic phase for anisotropic interaction. We also analyze the effect of imaginary field on quantum criticality through ground state geometry phase. It causes a shift of transition point but does not change the order of phase transition in anisotropic interaction region. However, the phase transition is related to the original Hermitian degeneracy in anisotropic interaction region, which indicates that the imaginary transverse field cannot change phase boundary and critical behavior.

Phase diagram for the spin-3/2 quantum ferromagnetic Blume-Capel model in a transverse crystal field: an approximation at the mean-field level

Carvalho, D. C., J. A. Plascak

We investigate the phase diagram for the spin-$3/2$ ferromagnetic Blume-Capel model in a transverse crystal field using the standard mean-field approximation within the framework of Bogoliubov inequality for free energy. We draw a very rich phase diagram with first- and second-order transition lines; tricritical and tetracritical points; critical endpoint of order 2 and double critical endpoint. Additionally, the behaviour of magnetisation as a function of temperature over a wide range of values of both longitudinal and transverse crystal fields is also analysed. To the best of our knowledge, this quantum spin model has only been studied employing an effective field theory, which in turn was not able to characterise completely the multicritical phenomena in its phase diagram, because that procedure is not based on free energy. Thus, our findings on the phase diagram for the present model are novel as they have been not previously reported.

Two-dimensional quantum-spin-1/2 XXZ magnet in zero magnetic field: Global thermodynamics from renormalisation group theory

Ozan S. Sarıyer

Phase diagram, critical properties and thermodynamic functions of the two-dimensional field-free quantum-spin-1/2 XXZ model has been calculated globally using a numerical renormalisation group theory. The nearest-neighbour spin-spin correlations and entanglement properties, as well as internal energy and specific heat are calculated globally at all temperatures for the whole range of exchange interaction anisotropy, from XY limit to Ising limits, for both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic cases. We show that there exists long-range (quasi-long-range) order at low-temperatures, and the low-lying excitations are gapped (gapless) in the Ising-like easy-axis (XY-like easy-plane) regime. Besides, we identify quantum phase transitions at zero-temperature.

Field-induced quantum criticality of a spin-1/2 planar ferromagnet

Maria Teresa Mercaldo, Ileana Rabuffo, Alvaro Caramico D’Auria +1 more

The low-temperature critical properties and crossovers of a spin-½ planar ferromagnet in a longitudinal magnetic field are explored in terms of an anisotropic bosonic action, suitable to describe the spin model in the low-temperature regime. This is performed adopting a procedure which combines an averaging over dynamic degrees of freedom and the classical Wilson renormalization group transformation. Within this framework we get the phase boundary, ending in a quantum critical point, and general expressions for the correlation length and susceptibility as functions of the temperature and the applied magnetic field within the disordered phase. In particular, two crossovers occur decreasing the temperature with the magnetic field fixed at its quantum critical point value, which might be actually observable in complex magnetic compounds, as suggested by recent experiments.
