Abstract

The spin-1 Ising model on the square lattice with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange interactions [both bilinear ($J$) and biquadratic ($K$) and crystal-field interaction ($\ensuremath{\Delta}$) is studied via a renormalization-group transformation in position space. The phase diagram in $J$, $K$, $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ space is found to have one surface of critical phase transitions and two surfaces of first-order phase transitions. These surfaces are variously bounded by an ordinary tricritical line, an isolated critical line, and a line of critical end points. These three lines joint at a special tricritical point corresponding to the transition of the three-state Potts model. The over-all phase diagram is qualitatively similar to that obtained with the mean-field approximation, except in the vicinity of the Potts transition where a four-phase coexistence line in mean-field theory shrinks into a special tricritical point in renormalization-group theory. Symmetry considerations guide the construction of our truncated renormalization-group transformation. The global connectivity and local exponents of the thirteen separate fixed points underlying this quite complicated structure are determined. Local analysis with respect to magnetic field ($H$) and another odd interaction ($L$) is performed. A one-adjusted-parameter version of our transformation yields remarkably quantitative results, predicting the Potts transition temperature, for example, within 0.3% of the exact value.

Three-component model and tricritical points: A renormalization-group study. Two dimensions

Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths, Julia M. Yeomans +1 more

The global phase diagram for a three-component lattice gas or spin-one Ising model with general single-site and nearest-neighbor "ferromagnetic" interactions is worked out for two-dimensional lattices using a Migdal-Kadanoff recursion relation. It differs in important qualitative respects from the corresponding mean-field phase diagram. The set of fixed points and flows provides the characteristic phase diagrams of the three-state Potts multicritical point and the ordinary ($n=1$) tricritical point in a complete set of symmetry-breaking fields. The latter is associated, in this renormalization-group scheme, with seven distinct critical fixed points, a number which is surprisingly large.

Renormalization-group approach to surface critical behavior in the semi-infinite spin- 32 Blume-Emery-Griffiths model

A. Bakchich, M. El Bouziani

Using a renormalization-group transformation in position space based on the Migdal-Kadanoff recursion relations, we investigate the three-dimensional semi-infinite cubic spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ Blume-Emery-Griffiths model with single-site uniaxial anisotropy and nearest-neighbor pair interactions, both bilinear and biquadratic. The fixed-point topologies and corresponding phase diagrams predicted for this model are presented. Attention is focused on the renormalization-group description of the surface critical behaviors, in comparison with the mean-field approximation results. Three main classes of system phase diagrams are determined, featuring a rich variety of phase transitions associated with the surface with type being according to the values of bulk and surface interaction parameters. Surface critical, tricritical, bicritical, and multicritical points are also found.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional three-state Potts model with an additional mean-field interaction

Alessandro Campa, Vahan Hovhannisyan, Stefano Ruffo +1 more

Abstract We derive the phase diagram of the one-dimensional three-state Potts model with an additional mean-field interaction in the canonical ensemble. The free energy is obtained by mapping the model onto the spin-1 Blume–Emery–Griffiths model and solving it by using a Hubbard–Stratonovich transformation combined with the transfer matrix method. A complex structure with lines of first-order transitions, two triple points and a critical point appears at finite temperature. The phase diagram is two-dimensional, since there are two adjustable parameters, the nearest-neighbour coupling K and the temperature T . We show that the phase diagram does not present second-order phase transition lines, due to the fact that the order parameter is not a symmetry-breaking one. Quite remarkably, we are able to determine analytically one of the first-order phase transition lines. We also prove that, when the nearest-neighbour coupling K is large and negative, the first-order transition temperature becomes asymptotically independent of K .

Position-space renormalization-group investigation of the spin-3/2 Blume-Emery-Griffiths model with repulsive biquadratic coupling

A. Bakchich, M. El Bouziani

Phase transitions of a four-component lattice gas or spin-3/2 Blume-Emery-Griffiths model, with a single-ion uniaxial anisotropy and nearest-neighbour pair interactions, both bilinear and biquadratic, are investigated for two-dimensional lattices using an approximate renormalization-group approach of the Migdal-Kadanoff type. The set of fixed points and flows provide the characteristic phase diagrams, in the case of repulsive biquadratic interaction, featuring four ordered phases including high-entropy ferrimagnetic and staggered quadrupolar phases. Successive phase transitions and multicritical points are also found.

Stepwise positional-orientational order and the multicritical-multistructural global phase diagram of the s=3/2 Ising model from renormalization-group theory

Çağın Yunus, B. Renklioglu, Mustafa Keskín +1 more

The spin-3/2 Ising model, with nearest-neighbor interactions only, is the prototypical system with two different ordering species, with concentrations regulated by a chemical potential. Its global phase diagram, obtained in d=3 by renormalization-group theory in the Migdal-Kadanoff approximation or equivalently as an exact solution of a d=3 hierarchical lattice, with flows subtended by 40 different fixed points, presents a very rich structure containing eight different ordered and disordered phases, with more than 14 different types of phase diagrams in temperature and chemical potential. It exhibits phases with orientational and/or positional order. It also exhibits quintuple phase transition reentrances. Universality of critical exponents is conserved across different renormalization-group flow basins via redundant fixed points. One of the phase diagrams contains a plastic crystal sequence, with positional and orientational ordering encountered consecutively as temperature is lowered. The global phase diagram also contains double critical points, first-order and critical lines between two ordered phases, critical end points, usual and unusual (inverted) bicritical points, tricritical points, multiple tetracritical points, and zero-temperature criticality and bicriticality. The four-state Potts permutation-symmetric subspace is contained in this model.

Renormalization-group results for the Blume-Capel model in two and three dimensions

Theodore W. Burkhardt, H. J. F. Knops

A Kadanoff lower-bound renormalization transformation with three variational parameters has been applied to the Blume-Capel model by Burkhardt. We report some additional results obtained in a particular one-parameter subspace of the three variational parameters. In this subspace the transformation treats the three possible Blume-Capel ground-state configurations with all the spins in the same state on an equal footing and preserves the three-state permutational symmetry of the Potts model. There are fixed points associated with first-order, critical, and tricritical transitions. The variational parameters maximizing the free energy at the critical and tricritical fixed points differ by only a few percent. The critical exponents associated with the different transitions and various points on the critical surfaces are calculated for $d=2,3$ dimensions.
