Abstract

Abstract We theoretically investigate the four wave mixing (FWM) and normal mode splitting (NMS) in coupled double quantum dots cavity system in the presence of a third-order Kerr nonlinear χ ( 3 ) medium. The FWM generated in the system has narrow spectral width and this can be tuned by nonlinear medium strength, the coupling strength between two coupled quantum dots and pump strength. Further, we study NMS that can also be tuned by various physical parameters and show that energy exchange between different modes is possible. The proposed model have potential applications in the field of quantum information processing.

Controllable four-wave mixing based on quantum dot-cavity coupling system

Hong-Wu Xing, Bin Chen, Li-Li Xing +3 more

Abstract We theoretically study the four-wave mixing (FWM) response in a quantum dot-cavity coupling system, where a two-level quantum dot (QD) is placed in an optical cavity while the cavity mode is coupled to the nanomechanical resonator via radiation pressure. The influences of the QD-cavity coupling strength, the Rabi coupling strength of the QD, and the power of the pump light on the FWM intensity are mainly considered. The numerical results show that the FWM intensity in this hybrid system can be significantly enhanced by increasing the QD-cavity coupling strength. In addition, the FWM intensity can be effectively modulated by the Rabi coupling strength and the pump power. Furthermore, the effects of the cavity decay rate and the cavity-pump detuning on the FWM signal are also explored. The obtained results may have potential applications in the fields of quantum optics and quantum information science.

Optical switching and normal mode splitting in hybrid semiconductor microcavity containing quantum well and Kerr medium driven by amplitude-modulated field

Madhav Kumar Singh, Pradip K. Jha, Aranya B. Bhattacherjee

We theoretically investigate optical bistability/multistability for all optical switching signature in a hybrid semiconductor microcavity system comprising a quantum well and a Kerr nonlinear substrate. The system is essentially two optically coupled microcavities with one of the microcavity being driven by an external amplitude-modulated pump laser. We show that the switching between bistable and multistable behaviour is influenced by the modulated pump laser, Kerr nonlinearity and the optical coupling between the two microcavities. We further investigate the intracavity spectrum of quantum fluctuations which exhibit the well-known normal mode splitting (NMS). The NMS behaviour is also found to be influenced by the system parameters. These results demonstrate that the present hybrid nonlinear system can be used in designing sensitive optical devices.

Optical bistability and entanglement in two optically coupled cavities under the effect of a nonlinear medium

Surabhi Yadav, Vijay Bhatt, Aranya B. Bhattacherjee +1 more

We theoretically investigate optical bistability and entanglement in a hybrid nonlinear system of two coupled cavities via a single-mode waveguide. The left cavity contains an ensemble of N quantum dots (QDs) and a Kerr medium to enhance the nonlinearity as it causes to observe the bistable behaviour of the system. We study the Kerr medium, QD ensemble, and cavity coupling effect on bistability response shown by mean intracavity photons in the left cavity. In addition, we have shown entanglement between different subsystems and found that entanglement can be generated between the two coupled cavity photons, cavity photons, and QD ensembles. Additionally, we investigate the effect of different parameters on entanglement. Our findings show that Kerr nonlinearity and the hopping parameter between the two cavities can effectively control the optical properties of the proposed hybrid system, which can be used to design efficient optical devices and the entangled optical photons have applications such as quantum information transfer.

Four-Wave Mixing in Asymmetric Double Quantum Dot Molecule–Metal Nanoparticle Assemblies

Spyridon G. Kosionis, Emmanuel Paspalakis

In this study, the four-wave mixing (FWM) spectrum of a strongly pumped hybrid structure is theoretically examined. The hybrid structure consists of an asymmetric double semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) molecule and a spherical metal nanoparticle (MNP), which are coupled together via long-range Coulomb interaction. Having as a starting point the Hamiltonian of the system, in the dipole and the rotating-wave approximations, we derive a set of nonlinear density matrix equations, which are numerically solved, in the steady-state limit, and then the FWM coefficient is calculated within a range of values of the pump–probe field detuning. The spectral response of the FWM coefficient is investigated, for different values of the pump-field detuning, the electron-tunneling rate, and the energy gap between the upper states in the energy-level scheme of the double SQD molecule, while the interparticle distance between the two components of the structure is modified.

Steady-state absorption–dispersion properties and four-wave mixing process in a quantum dot nanostructure

Xiangying Hao, Jing Wu, Ying Wang

With the presence of the signal pulse, a quantum dot (QD) four-level structure interacting with four fields forms a double-cascade configuration. The linear optical properties for amplification, absorption, and dispersion of two weak near-infrared (NIR) lights in this scheme are investigated. It shows that the amplification, transparency, normal and anomalous dispersion of the probe and signal fields, i.e., the two NIR waves, can be achieved by adjusting the relative phase of the applied lasers, the probe detuning, and the two pump Rabi energies appropriately, while when the signal pulse is removed, the nonlinear optical phenomenon four-wave mixing (FWM) originating from quantum interference is demonstrated. A highly efficient FWM process with a NIR mixing field generated can be realized in this system. Such investigation in a semiconductor QD system with flexible design and widely adjustable parameters may provide new possibilities for realizing the efficient generation and gain of NIR waves and manipulating light propagation between subluminal and superluminal in the solid-state materials.
