Abstract

In this work the results of the study on a generalization of the XY model with an additional q-fold nematic-like term through Monte Carlo simulations in two dimensions (2D) have been presented. While the conventional 2D XY model has only integer vortexes, the generalized 2D XY model has both integer and non-integer 1/q vortexes, making the phase diagram of the generalized 2D XY model is much richer than that of the conventional 2D XY model. Here, we located the phase transition between the disordered phase (P), the quasi-long-range order phase (F), and the nematic phase (N) for the case of q = 3. We provided the numerical evidence to clarify the N−F phase transition of either the first-ordered or second-ordered phase transition. The results showed that the N−F phase transition is the second-ordered, not the first-order phase transition.

New Ordered Phases in a Class of Generalized XY Models

Fábio Campos Poderoso, Jeferson J. Arenzon, Yan Levin

It is well known that the 2D XY model exhibits an unusual infinite order phase transition belonging to the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) universality class. Introduction of a nematic coupling into the XY Hamiltonian leads to an additional phase transition in the Ising universality class [D. H. Lee and G. Grinstein, Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 541 (1985)]. Using a combination of extensive Monte Carlo simulations and finite size scaling, we show that the higher order harmonics lead to a qualitatively different phase diagram, with additional ordered phases originating from the competition between the ferromagnetic and pseudonematic couplings. The new phase transitions belong to the 2D Potts, Ising, or KT universality classes.

Magnetic quasi-long-range ordering in nematic systems due to competition between higher-order couplings

Milan ˇ Zukovič, Georgii Kalagov

Critical properties of the two-dimensional XY model involving solely nematic-like terms of the second and third orders are investigated by spin-wave analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that, even though neither of the nematic-like terms alone can induce magnetic ordering, their coexistence and competition leads to an extended phase of the magnetic quasi-long-range-order phase, wedged between the two nematic-like phases induced by the respective couplings. Thus, except for the multicritical point, at which all the phases meet, for any finite value of the coupling parameters ratio there are two phase transition: one from the paramagnetic phase to one of the two nematic-like phases followed by another one at lower temperatures to the magnetic phase. The finite-size scaling analysis indicates that the phase transitions between the magnetic and nematic-like phases belong to the Ising and three-state Potts universality classes. Inside the competition-induced algebraic magnetic phase, the spin-pair correlation function is found to decay even much more slowly than in the standard XY model with purely magnetic interactions. Such a magnetic phase is characterized by an extremely low vortex-antivortex pair density attaining a minimum close to the point at which the two couplings are of about equal strength.

Competing nematic interactions in a generalized X Y model in two and three dimensions

Gabriel Antônio Canova, Yan Levin, Jeferson J. Arenzon

We study a generalization of the XY model with an additional nematic-like term through extensive numerical simulations and finite-size techniques, both in two and three dimensions. While the original model favors local alignment, the extra term induces angles of 2π/q between neighboring spins. We focus here on the q=8 case (while presenting new results for other values of q as well) whose phase diagram is much richer than the well-known q=2 case. In particular, the model presents not only continuous, standard transitions between Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phases as in q=2, but also infinite-order transitions involving intermediate, competition-driven phases absent for q=2 and 3. Besides presenting multiple transitions, our results show that having vortices decoupling at a transition is not a sufficient condition for it to be of BKT type.

Correlation length in a generalized two-dimensional XY model

Duong Xuan Nui, Le Tuan, Nguyen Duc Trung Kien +3 more

The measurements of the magnetic and nematic correlation lengths in a generalization of the two-dimensional XY model on the square lattice are presented using classical Monte Carlo simulation. The full phase diagram is reexamined based on these correlation lengths, demonstrating their power in studying generalized XY models. The ratio between the correlation length and the lattice size has distinctive behaviors which can be used to distinguish different types of phase transition. More importantly, the magnetic correlation length give more insights into the tricritical region where the paramagnetic, nematic, and quasi-long-range phases meet. It shows signatures for the intermediate region starting from the tricritical point, where the transition line is neither of the same physics as the Ising transition below nor the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition far above the tricritical point.

The phase diagram of a generalised XY model

D.B. Carpenter, J. T. Chalker

A generalisation of the two-dimensional XY model is studied using Monte Carlo simulation. In this model, two-component classical spins interact both ferromagnetically and nematically. Three phases occur as temperature and the two interaction strengths are varied: a high-temperature, disordered phase, and two low-temperature phases with algebraic correlations in, respectively, the ferromagnetic and nematic order parameters. The critical behaviour at the phase boundaries is examined: the high-temperature phase is entered via Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions, whilst the low-temperature phases are separated by an Ising transition.

Phase diagram of generalized XY model using the tensor renormalization group

Abhishek Samlodia, Vamika Longia, Raghav G. Jha +1 more

We use the higher-order tensor renormalization group method to study the two-dimensional generalized XY model that admits integer and half-integer vortices. This model is the deformation of the classical XY model and has a rich phase structure consisting of nematic, ferromagnetic, and disordered phases and three transition lines belonging to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless and Ising class. We explore the model for a wide range of temperatures, T , and the deformation parameter, Δ , and compute specific heat along with integer and half-integer magnetic susceptibility, finding both Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like and Ising-like transitions and the region where they meet.
