The phase diagram of a generalised XY model

Abstract

A generalisation of the two-dimensional XY model is studied using Monte Carlo simulation. In this model, two-component classical spins interact both ferromagnetically and nematically. Three phases occur as temperature and the two interaction strengths are varied: a high-temperature, disordered phase, and two low-temperature phases with algebraic correlations in, respectively, the ferromagnetic and nematic order parameters. The critical behaviour at the phase boundaries is examined: the high-temperature phase is entered via Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions, whilst the low-temperature phases are separated by an Ising transition.

Phase diagram of generalized XY model using the tensor renormalization group

Abhishek Samlodia, Vamika Longia, Raghav G. Jha +1 more

We use the higher-order tensor renormalization group method to study the two-dimensional generalized XY model that admits integer and half-integer vortices. This model is the deformation of the classical XY model and has a rich phase structure consisting of nematic, ferromagnetic, and disordered phases and three transition lines belonging to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless and Ising class. We explore the model for a wide range of temperatures, T , and the deformation parameter, Δ , and compute specific heat along with integer and half-integer magnetic susceptibility, finding both Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like and Ising-like transitions and the region where they meet. Binder Parameter in a Generalized Two-dimensional XY Model

Duong Xuan Nui, Truong Thi Bach Yen, Nguyễn Hữu Cường +6 more

We performed Monte Carlo simulation for a two-dimensional generalized XY model and calculated the magnetic and nematic Binder parameters. The phase diagram is re-examined based on these Binder parameters, demonstrating their power in studying generalized XY models. The Binder parameter has distinctive behaviors, resulting in different types of phase transition. More importantly, the magnetic Binder parameter gives more insights into the tricritical region where the Kosterlitz-Thouless, Ising, and 1/2 Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition lines meet. It shows signatures for the intermediate region starting from the tricritical point, where the transition line is neither the same physics as the Ising transition below nor the KT transition far above the tricritical point.

Phase transitions in the two-dimensional XY model with random phases: A Monte Carlo study

J. Maucourt, Daniel R. Grempel

We study the two-dimensional $\mathrm{XY}$ model with quenched random phases by Monte Carlo simulation and finite-size scaling analysis. We determine the phase diagram of the model and study its critical behavior as a function of disorder and temperature. If the strength of the randomness is less than a critical value, ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{c},$ the system has a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase transition from the paramagnetic phase to a state with quasi-long-range order. Our data suggest that the latter exists down to $T=0$ in contradiction with theories that predict the appearance of a low-temperature reentrant phase. At the critical disorder ${T}_{\mathrm{KT}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ and for $\ensuremath{\sigma}>{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{c}$ there is no quasiordered phase. At zero temperature there is a phase transition between two different glassy states at ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{c}.$ The functional dependence of the correlation length on $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ suggests that this transition corresponds to the disorder-driven unbinding of vortex pairs.

Phase Diagram of XY Model with Nematic Coupling on the Simple Cubic Lattice

Jian-Ping Lü, Qing‐Hu Chen

Using cluster Monte Carlo method, we numerically investigate the criticality in the XY model with nematic coupling on the simple cubic lattice. We determine critical lines belong to the three-dimensional XY universality class in variable of θ (2θ) between the XY-ferromagnetic (nematic) and disordered states. Furthermore, the phase transition between the XY-ferromagnetic and the nematic states is found to be in the three-dimensional Ising universality class. The critical points are determined from the intersections of Binder ratios for various system sizes. With two sets of critical points obtained, we finally construct the phase diagram on the Δ-J plane.

Critical properties of XY model on two-layer Villain–ferromagnetic lattice

Wang Yi, R. Quartu, Xiaoyan Liu +2 more

We investigate phase transitions of the XY model on a two-layer square lattice which consists of a Villain plane ( J ) and a ferromagnetic plane ( I ), using Monte Carlo simulations and a histogram method. Depending on the values of interaction parameters ( I , J ), the system presents three phases: namely, a Kosterlitz–Thouless (KT) phase in which the two planes are critical for I predominant over J , a chiral phase in which the two planes have a chiral order for J predominant over I and a new phase in which only the Villain plane has a chiral order and the ferromagnetic plane is paramagnetic with a small value of chirality. We clarify the nature of phase transitions by using a finite size scaling method. We find three different kinds of transitions according to the values of ( I , J ): the KT transition, the Ising transition and an XY -Ising transition with ν = 0.849(3). It turns out that the Ising or XY -Ising transition is associated with the disappearance of the chiral order in the Villain plane.

New Ordered Phases in a Class of Generalized XY Models

Fábio Campos Poderoso, Jeferson J. Arenzon, Yan Levin

It is well known that the 2D XY model exhibits an unusual infinite order phase transition belonging to the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) universality class. Introduction of a nematic coupling into the XY Hamiltonian leads to an additional phase transition in the Ising universality class [D. H. Lee and G. Grinstein, Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 541 (1985)]. Using a combination of extensive Monte Carlo simulations and finite size scaling, we show that the higher order harmonics lead to a qualitatively different phase diagram, with additional ordered phases originating from the competition between the ferromagnetic and pseudonematic couplings. The new phase transitions belong to the 2D Potts, Ising, or KT universality classes.
