Uncertainty relations for mesoscopic coherent light

Ariane Soret, Ohad Shpielberg, Éric Akkermans

Abstract Thermodynamic uncertainty relations unveil useful connections between fluctuations in thermal systems and entropy production. This work extends these ideas to the disparate field of zero temperature quantum mesoscopic physics where fluctuations are due to coherent effects and entropy production is replaced by a cost function. The cost function arises naturally as a bound on fluctuations, induced by coherent effects—a critical resource in quantum mesoscopic physics. Identifying the cost function as an important quantity demonstrates the potential of importing powerful methods from non-equilibrium statistical physics to quantum mesoscopics.

Quantum Kinetic Uncertainty Relations in Mesoscopic Conductors at Strong Coupling

Gianmichele Blasi, Ricard Ravell Rodríguez, Michael V. Moskalets +2 more

Kinetic uncertainty relations (KURs) set fundamental limits on the precision of nonequilibrium transport by bounding the signal-to-noise ratio of currents in terms of the dynamical activity, a quantity that counts exchange events between a system and its reservoirs. This framework is well established in the weak-coupling regime, where transport occurs via well-defined, particlelike tunneling processes. At strong coupling, however, quantum coherence challenges both the validity of standard KURs and the notion of activity itself. In this Letter, we introduce a generalized definition of dynamical activity valid at arbitrary system-reservoir coupling, and show that it leads to a breakdown of standard KURs at strong coupling. Building on this result, we derive and prove a novel uncertainty relation, denoted quantum KUR (QKUR), which provides a genuine quantum extension of KUR, accounting for intrinsic quantum coherent contributions of the generalized activity. We demonstrate that the generalized activity reduces to the standard master-equation definition in the weak-coupling regime for generic systems of N coupled quantum dots described by a quadratic Hamiltonian, and analyze the resulting QKUR bound in paradigmatic quantum-coherent mesoscopic devices, including single- and double-quantum dot systems and a quantum point contact.

Analytical solution of driven time-dependent mesoscopic circuits

Jinying Ma, Yazhuo Yao, Ronghai Liu +3 more

When a time-dependent harmonic system is further driven by an external source, it presents significant challenges to obtaining analytical solutions for the system. This paper applies the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant method to a mesoscopic time-dependent dissipative inductor-capacitor (RLC) circuit with an external source. By constructing quantum invariant Hermitian operators and introducing auxiliary equations that can describe the effects of external sources and resistance, we analytically solve the Schrödinger equation of the system. Taking an alternating current (AC) voltage source as an example, we derive the generalized coherent states of a mesoscopic time-dependent RLC circuit with an external source, calculate the quantum fluctuations of charge and current, and obtain their corresponding uncertainty relations. The results indicate that the time-dependent inductance and resistance disrupt the minimum uncertainty relation of the Glauble coherent states in driven time-dependent mesoscopic RLC circuits. This research contributes to the establishment of a quantum theory for mesoscopic circuits.
