Complementarity

Abstract

Dual pictures, dual language: linguistic analysis is the key to understanding quantum mechanics, Bohr told his protege Heisenberg, shattering his hard-won vision of the microworld. The very words physicists use to describe reality constrain their knowledge of it, and scientists in every field will one day encounter this barrier to human understanding. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

Philosophies

David Wick

Scientists sometimes pretend that what they do is as natural as breathing, and hence they have no philosophies. But Heisenberg, Bohr, Schrodinger, and Einstein all paid attention to theirs, and indeed no scientific discipline in this century has attracted more philosophical comment than quantum physics. 172 Should one not therefore make a compendium of these views, the better to shift truth from error? These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

Alleys to Be Further Investigated and Open Questions

Gerard ’t Hooft

A number of fundamental questions of theoretical physics are directly related to the question of interpreting quantum mechanics. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

Motivation for This Work

Gerard ’t Hooft

The fundamental laws of Nature that govern the physics of atoms, elementary particles, light quanta, and everything else that is small and light, have been found to fit in one grandiose framework called Quantum Mechanics. The internal logic of this framework appears to be counter intuitive and mysterious, while extremely coherent and effective. In this general introduction the author explains why he feels the need for expressing his views on how to understand these facts, even if many known scientists have already given extensive reviews of numerous ideas and approaches. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

The Strange World of the Quantum

P. C. W. Davies, J. R. Brown

The word ‘quantum’ means ‘a quantity’ or ‘a discrete amount’. On an everyday scale we are accustomed to the idea that the properties of an object such as its size, weight, colour, temperature, surface area, and motion are all qualities which can vary from one object to another in a smooth and continuous way. Apples, for example, come in all manner of shapes, sizes and colours without any noticeable gradations in between. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

Quantum Physics and Ordinary Language

T. Bergstein

This book deals with the interdependence of the phenomenological and conceptual levels of experience. This interdependence is most objectively demonstrated by the complementarity of quantum physics. When examining the basic function of ordinary language within quantum physics it is seen that complementarity is fundamental to human comprehension itself, particularly to the interaction of language and mind.

Quantum Mechanics

Kerstin Fink

The objective of Chapter 4 is to give an overview of the basic concepts of quantum mechanics and their interpretation. Thus this chapter functions as a theoretical preparation for a better understanding of the quantum world and of the knowledge measurement process. First, the terminology of the word “quantum” and its impact on the derivation of the term “knowledge quantum” is explained in Chapter 4.1. Then, the discussion moves to the historical development of quantum mechanics. The key issues and current research field for quantum theory will be given in an overview. The following chapters show some insights into key quantum mechanical concepts such as slit-experiments, wave-particle duality, the Copenhagener interpretation, and quantum probability. Chapter 4 closes with an explanation of the Uncertainty Principle of Werner Heisenberg, especially since the Uncertainty Principle is used to derive the knowledge measurement process through the method of analogical reasoning. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
