Observation of Unidirectional Amplified Spontaneous Emission Induced by Velocity-Dependent Light Shifts

G. Petite, Bernadette Johnson, Wulfhard K. Lange +1 more

Laser-induced velocity-dependent light shifts have been used to compensate the Doppler broadening of an atomic transition. The unidirectional feature of this technique allowed us to observe a forward/backward asymmetry in the amplified spontaneous emission from an excited sodium vapor, switched on by a pulse of laser light.

Light-induced unidirectional light switching

We report the first observation of a unidirectionally emitting medium obtained by the method of Doppler compensation by velocity-dependent light shifts. The emission can be switched on by a pulse of laser light. The properties of this light-switching technique are experimentally demonstrated.
