Abstract

Atoms on tap? By using a laser beam to guide streams of rubidium atoms through a hollow optical fiber, a team of physicists in Colorado may have found a way to deliver atoms to precise locations for use in areas ranging from nanotechnology to quantum mechanics.

Optical Collimation of Atomic Beam

Laser radiation propagating through a hollow-core optical fiber exerts a central force on atoms and transports them through the fiber. This atom guide works as an atomic beam collimator that can continuously control the velocity and spatial distributions of the ejecting atoms via modulation of the laser parameters
