Abstract

Image processing on quantum platform is a hot topic for researchers now a day. Inspired from the idea of quantum physics, researchers are trying to shift their focus from classical image processing towards quantum image processing. Storing and representation of images in a binary and ternary quantum system is always one of the major issues in quantum image processing. This chapter mainly deals with several issues regarding various types of image representation and storage techniques in a binary as well as ternary quantum system. How image pixels can be organized and retrieved based on their positions and intensity values in 2-states and 3-states quantum systems is explained here in detail. Beside that it also deals with the topic that focuses on the clear filteration of images in quantum system to remove unwanted noises. This chapter also deals with those important applications (like Quantum image compression, Quantum edge detection, Quantum Histogram etc.) where quantum image processing associated with some of the natural computing techniques (like AI, ANN, ACO, etc.).

Image Processing Using Quantum Computing

Bably Dolly, Deepa. D. Raj

Image processing via the quantum platform is an emerging area for researchers. Researchers are more interested to move on towards quantum image processing instead of classical image processing. This chapter starts with the review of different quantum image computing-based research papers with a brief idea of the ethics which inspire quantum computing in the background and focus on the current scenario of recent trends of quantum image representation, pitfalls, and summarization of the pros and cons of it, with the limitations of the technologies used and focus on the recent work to be going on and application of it in a different field. In the next, it will focus on the different methods used by the researcher in the previous papers. The next section discussed the different methods based on quantum image representation used. Some different techniques of image storage, retrieval, and representation in a quantum system are discussed. Also, this chapter briefs the pros and cons of using different techniques in quantum systems in comparison to classical systems.

Quantum Computing for Image Processing and Artificial Vision: Innovations in Advanced Quantum Physics

Tarek Nouioua, Nour El-Houda Yahiaoui

This paper delves into the groundbreaking potential of quantum computing, with a primary focus on qubits and their wide-ranging applications. It explores the fundamental principles of quantum physics, such as entanglement and superposition, demonstrating how these principles underpin innovative approaches to data representation and processing. Real-world demonstrations utilizing quantum hardware underscore the exponential advantages that quantum computing offers in terms of both speed and storage capacity. Within the realm of quantum computing, one major objective is to address the issue of decoherence, and the article proposes the utilization of photons as qubits due to their virtually infinite decoherence times. This introduction of Photonic quantum computing paves the way for a robust and scalable quantum computing approach, with specific objectives centered around enhancing the stability and scalability of quantum systems. Furthermore, the article explores the fascinating domain of quantum image processing, aiming to revolutionize the fields of image analysis and compression. Quantum image representations are envisioned to significantly enhance storage efficiency, and the article sets objectives to develop practical quantum algorithms for image processing tasks. To illustrate the practicality of these advancements, the article showcases a real-world implementation of quantum edge detection, emphasizing its promising applications not only in medical imaging but also in advancing artificial vision systems.

Quantum image processing on real superconducting and trapped-ion based quantum computers

Alexander Geng, Ali Moghiseh, Claudia Redenbach +1 more

Abstract The size and number of images and the amount of data we process every day have grown rapidly over the last years. Quantum computers promise to process this data more efficiently since classical images can be stored in quantum states. Experiments on quantum computer simulators prove the paradigms this promise is built on to be correct. However, currently, running the very same algorithms on a real quantum computer is often too error-prone to be of any practical use. We explore the current possibilities for image processing on real quantum computers. We redesign a commonly used quantum image encoding technique to reduce its susceptibility to errors. We show experimentally that the current size limit for images to be encoded on a quantum computer and subsequently retrieved with an error of at most 5 % is 2 × 2 pixels. A way to circumvent this limitation is to combine ideas of classical filtering with a quantum algorithm operating locally, only. We show the practicability of this strategy using the application example of edge detection. Our hybrid filtering scheme’s quantum part is an artificial neuron, working well on real quantum computers, too.

The Storage and Retrieval Technologies of Quantum Images

Quantum image processing represents an emerging image processing technology by taking advantage of quantum computation. Quantum image processing faces the first question: How is an image stored in and retrieved from a quantum system? To solve the issue, the authors provide six quantum image representations, which can be divided into three categories. The first, second, and third categories store color information using amplitudes, phases, and basis states, respectively. Next, they design their circuits to implement the storage of quantum image. Then, retrieval methods are introduced. The storage and retrieval technologies of quantum image are the basis and premise condition to process quantum images.
