The Storage and Retrieval Technologies of Quantum Images

Abstract

Quantum image processing represents an emerging image processing technology by taking advantage of quantum computation. Quantum image processing faces the first question: How is an image stored in and retrieved from a quantum system? To solve the issue, the authors provide six quantum image representations, which can be divided into three categories. The first, second, and third categories store color information using amplitudes, phases, and basis states, respectively. Next, they design their circuits to implement the storage of quantum image. Then, retrieval methods are introduced. The storage and retrieval technologies of quantum image are the basis and premise condition to process quantum images.

Image processing via the quantum platform is an emerging area for researchers. Researchers are more interested to move on towards quantum image processing instead of classical image processing. This chapter starts with the review of different quantum image computing-based research papers with a brief idea of the ethics which inspire quantum computing in the background and focus on the current scenario of recent trends of quantum image representation, pitfalls, and summarization of the pros and cons of it, with the limitations of the technologies used and focus on the recent work to be going on and application of it in a different field. In the next, it will focus on the different methods used by the researcher in the previous papers. The next section discussed the different methods based on quantum image representation used. Some different techniques of image storage, retrieval, and representation in a quantum system are discussed. Also, this chapter briefs the pros and cons of using different techniques in quantum systems in comparison to classical systems.

Image storage, retrieval and compression in entangled quantum systems

Hai-Sheng Li, Qingxin Zhu, Ri‐Gui Zhou +2 more

A novel method is proposed in this paper to store and retrieve images in entangled quantum systems, i.e., we employ a 2-qubit (or 3-qubit) entangled quantum state to represent the colors of 3 pixels (or 5 pixels) of color or gray images, and design quantum circuits to store images in entangled quantum systems, in addition, illustrate how to retrieve images stored in entangled quantum systems and analyze that the number of measurement is needed at most to retrieve a correct entangled quantum state. Simulation results on the Lena image shows compression ratio is 5.7 when PSNR is 32.8DB by Fourier transform while compression ratio of 2-qubit entangled coding (i.e., 2-qubit entangled quantum states represent image colors) is 12 without losing any information of the image. Due to take advantage of the superposition and entanglement properties of quantum states, our method improves the ability of image compression.

Quantum computation and image processing: new trends in artificial intelligence

Salvador Elías Venegas-Andraca, Sougato Bose

The analysis and use of visual information is a first order task for AI researchers. Due to the architecture of classical computers and to the computational complexity of state-of-the-art algorithms, it is required to find better ways to store, process and retrieve information for image processing. One plausible and exciting approach is Quantum Information Processing (QIP). In this poster we present an initial step towards the definition of an emerging field, Quantum Image Processing, by showing how to store an image using a quantum system as well as some of the unique properties of that storage process derived from quantum mechanics laws.

Storing, processing, and retrieving an image using quantum mechanics

Salvador Elías Venegas-Andraca, Sougato Bose

We investigate the storage and retrieval of an image in a multi-particle quantum mechanical system. Several models are studied and compared with corresponding classical digital methods. We consider a situation in which qubits replace classical bits in an array of pixels and show several advantages. For example, we consider the situation in which 4 different values are randomly stored in a single qubit and show that quantum mechanical properties allow better reproduction of original stored values compared with classical (even stochastic) methods. The retrieval process is uniquely quantum (involves measurement in more than one bases). The independence and the finiteness of the stored copies of the image play an important role in the quantum protocol being better than the classical one. Other advantages of quantum storage of an image are found in its security.

Image Representation, Filtering, and Natural Computing in a Multivalued Quantum System

Sanjay Chakraborty, Lopamudra Dey

Image processing on quantum platform is a hot topic for researchers now a day. Inspired from the idea of quantum physics, researchers are trying to shift their focus from classical image processing towards quantum image processing. Storing and representation of images in a binary and ternary quantum system is always one of the major issues in quantum image processing. This chapter mainly deals with several issues regarding various types of image representation and storage techniques in a binary as well as ternary quantum system. How image pixels can be organized and retrieved based on their positions and intensity values in 2-states and 3-states quantum systems is explained here in detail. Beside that it also deals with the topic that focuses on the clear filteration of images in quantum system to remove unwanted noises. This chapter also deals with those important applications (like Quantum image compression, Quantum edge detection, Quantum Histogram etc.) where quantum image processing associated with some of the natural computing techniques (like AI, ANN, ACO, etc.).
