Abstract

In this paper, we illustrate an application of the Laplace transformation for finding the quantum mechanical Reflection and Transmission coefficients for a particle through a one-dimensional vertical step potential. Quantum mechanics is one of the branches of physics in which the physical problems are solved by algebraic and analytic methods. By applying the Laplace transformation, we can find the quantum mechanical Reflection and Transmission coefficients for a particle through a one-dimensional vertical step potential. Generally, the Laplace transformation has been applied in different areas of science and engineering and makes it easier to solve the problems inengineering applications. It is a mathematical tool which has been put to use for solving the differential equations without finding their general solutions. It has applications in nearly all science and engineering disciplines like analysis of electrical circuits, heat and mass transfer, fluid dynamics, nuclear physics, process controls, quantum mechanical problems, etc.

Revisiting the Laplace transform in quantum mechanics: correcting a flawed approach for the stationary Schrödinger equation

Luis M Báez, Andrés Santos

Abstract The Laplace transform is a valuable tool in physics, particularly in solving differential equations with initial or boundary conditions. A 2014 study by Tsaur and Wang (2014 Eur. J. Phys. 35 015006) introduced a Laplace-transform-based method to solve the stationary Schrödinger equation for various potentials. However, their approach contains critical methodological flaws: the authors disregard essential boundary conditions and apply the residue theorem incorrectly in the inverse transformation process. These errors ultimately cancel out, leading to correct results despite a flawed derivation. In this paper, we revisit the use of the Laplace transform for the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation, clarifying correct practices in handling boundary conditions and singularities. This analysis offers a sound and consistent framework for the application of Laplace transforms in stationary quantum mechanics, underscoring their educational utility in quantum mechanics coursework.

Quantum Mechanical Potential Step Functions, Barriers, Wells and the Tunneling Effect

Gilbert A. Ibitola, Olanrewaju Ajanaku

In this paper, use is made of the tools of analytical mechanics and the concept of operators to obtain the time-independent and time-dependent Schrodinger wave equations for quantum mechanical systems. Derivations are embarked upon of expressions for reflection and transmission coefficients for a particle of mass m as well as of energy E moving under different potential set-ups across step functions, barriers and well functions. The tunneling effect is then discussed. The transmission probability equation obtained in this research has been observed to be more accurate than the transmission probability expression deduced by some researchers in 2014 for a tunneling barrier. This research work finds applications in nuclear magnetic resonance imaging systems, synchrotrons, gyrators, accelerators, and in electrodynamics.

Connection between the immersing and transfer-matrix methods in one-dimensional scattering problems

Д. М. Седракян, А. Ж. Хачатрян, Eduard M Kazaryan +1 more

We show that application of the immersing and transfer-matrix methods to one-dimensional problems of particles scattering leads to the system of two linear equations for the functions F and Φ expressed by means of the transmission and reflection amplitudes. The expressions of these functions are derived. The offered method is illustrated by the finding of transmission and reflection coefficients for the potential barrier with a constant height. The developed method can be applied in solving the quasi-one-dimensional and two-dimensional problems of scattering.

A Laplace transform approach to the reflection and transmission of electrons at semi-infinite potential barriers

Hassan Mohamed Abdelalim Abdalla

Abstract The logic of the Schrödinger equation may be understood most readily by a consideration of a very important class of problems, i.e. those of the transmission and reflection of electrons through semi-infinite potential barriers. In this paper I revisit this problem by applying an alternative approach via Laplace transforms, demonstrating how effective they are in the determination of the solution.

Fractional Quantum Problem Based on Caputo-Fabrizio Derivative

Bouzenna Fatma El-Genbazi, Meftah Mohammed T

Background and Objective: In the context of the novel definition of the fractional derivative, we solve the Fractional Schrödinger equation based on the non-singular Caputo-Fabrizio derivative definition. The quantum particle is submitted to a step potential. We focus our study to find the reflection and transmission coefficients.Materials and Methods: To reach this goal, we first work out the fractional differential equation defined in terms of the Caputo-Fabrizio derivative. Results: Hence, according to the obtained wave functions of fractional Schrödinger equations, the reflection and transmission coefficient are calculated. Conclusion: Interestingly, our findings collapse to the standard results when the fractional order of derivative become integer numbers.
