Causality and the Complete Positivity of Classical Polarization Maps

Abstract

The most general physical transformation on the polarization state has been represented as an ensemble of Jones matrices, as ∑ i V i Φ V i †. But this has been either directly assumed or proven through non-rigourous means. We derive this expression from simple physical principles and the matrix theory of positive maps.

Causality and the complete positivity of classical polarization maps

Omar Gamel, Daniel F. V. James

Mueller and Jones matrices have been thoroughly studied as mathematical tools to describe the manipulation of the polarization state of classical light. In particular, the most general physical transformation on the polarization state has been represented as an ensemble of Jones matrices, as ∑iV(i)ΦV(i)(†). But this has generally been directly assumed without proof by most authors. In this Letter, we derive this expression from simple physical principles and the matrix theory of positive maps.

Physical transformations between quantum states

Zejun Huang, Chi-Kwong Li, Edward Poon +1 more

Given two sets of quantum states {A1, …, Ak} and {B1, …, Bk}, represented as sets as density matrices, necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of a physical transformation T, represented as a trace-preserving completely positive map, such that T(Ai) = Bi for i = 1, …, k. General completely positive maps without the trace-preserving requirement, and unital completely positive maps transforming the states are also considered.

A Unified Ensemble Approach to Classical Polarization Optics

Sudha, A. V. Gopala Rao, A. K. Rajagopal

Statistical ensemble formalism of Kim, Mandel and Wolf (J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 4, 433 (1987)) offers a realistic model for characterizing the effect of stochastic non-image forming optical media on the state of polarization of transmittedlight. With suitable choice of the Jones ensemble, various Mueller transformations - some of which have been unknown so far - are deduced. It is observed that the ensemble approach is formally identical to the positive operator valued measures (POVM) on the quantum density matrix. This observation, in combination with the recent suggestion by Ahnert and Payne (Phys. Rev. A 71, 012330, (2005)) - in the context of generalized quantum measurement on single photon polarization states - that linear optics elements can be employed in setting up all possible POVMs, enables us to propose a way of realizing different types of Mueller devices.

The Description of Polarization

Habatwa Vincent Mweene

In this paper, we extend to polarization the method we have recently employed to treat spin. We are led to a generalization of its treatment. Thus, we are able to connect its matrix treatment to first principles, and we obtain the most generalized probability amplitudes and operators for its description.
