Anomalous BCS equation for a Luttinger superconductor

Vieri Mastropietro

In the context of the Anderson theory of high T c cuprates, we develop a BCS theory for Luttinger liquids. If the Luttinger interaction is much stronger than the BCS potential we find that the BCS equation is quite modified compared to usual BCS equation for Fermi liquids. In particular T c predicted by the BCS equation for Luttinger liquids is quite higher than the usual T c for Fermi liquids. 1 The anomalous BCS equation The equivalent of BCS theory for a Luttinger liquid has not formally worked out, despite the relevance of such theory for the problem of superconductivity in the high-T c cuprates, see [1] or the discussion in the following section. Such theory should describe superconductors which in their normal state are Luttinger liquids. In this paper we develop such theory using constructive quantum field theory techniques, applied in many other Luttinger liquid problems, see [2], [3]. In particular, we compute in a rigorous way the BCS self-consistence equation for a spinni...

Superconductivity and the BCS-Bogoliubov Theory

Shuji Watanabe

First, we reformulate the BCS-Bogoliubov theory of superconductivity from the viewpoint of linear algebra. We define the BCS Hamiltonian on $\mathbb{C}^{2^{2M}}$, where $M$ is a positive integer. We discuss selfadjointness and symmetry of the BCS Hamiltonian as well as spontaneous symmetry breaking. Beginning with the gap equation, we give the well-known expression for the BCS state and find the existence of an energy gap. We also show that the BCS state has a lower energy than the normal state. Second, we introduce a new superconducting state explicitly and show from the viewpoint of linear algebra that this new state has a lower energy than the BCS state. Third, beginning with our new gap equation, we show from the viewpoint of linear algebra that we arrive at the results similar to those in the BCS-Bogoliubov theory.

Thermal vacuum and its perturbation theory of BCS superfluids

Ziwen Huang, Xu-Yang Hou, Hao Guo +2 more

The thermal field theory is applied to fermionic superfluids by doubling the degrees of freedom of the BCS theory. We construct the two-mode states and the corresponding Bogoliubov transformation to obtain the BCS thermal vacuum. The expectation values with respect to the BCS thermal vacuum produce the statistical average of the thermodynamic quantities. The BCS thermal vacuum allows a quantum-mechanical perturbation theory with the BCS theory serving as the unperturbed state. We demonstrate the perturbation theory by evaluating the leading-order corrections to the order parameter and other physical quantities. The BCS thermal vacuum is shown to be a generalized coherent and squeezed state, and it leads to a direct evaluation of the pairing correlation as a function of temperature. The correspondence between the thermal vacuum and purification of the density matrix allows a unitary transformation, and we found the geometric phase in the parameter space associated with the transformation.
