Chapter 25 . Lene Hau (1959–) Lene Hau started her scientific life doing theoretical physics, including a Ph.D. at Århus University in Denmark. But when she moved to Harvard, she turned to experiment. All her work is with samples at extremely low temperatures, surprisingly close to absolute zero. She was the source of breaking news in 1999 when she and her group announced that they had slowed the speed of light in a Bose-Einstein condensate to 17 meters per second (≈ 38 mph). Two years later, they even slowed light speed to zero. She has continued working in low-temperature physics with and without Bose-Einstein condensates.
