Scalar nonlinearities in physics and chemistry

Bettina Heimsoeth

Abstract Scalar nonlinearities are operators of the form N(u) = 〈Au, u〉Bu, where A, B are linear operators, and 〈·,·〉 is the inner product in a Hilbert space ℋ︁. This paper reviews applications of scalar nonlinearities. We show that operators of the form N(u) are found in equations that describe phenomena of classical mechanics, open systems of quantum mechanics, and chemical physics.

Fourth Vavilov Conference on Nonlinear Optics (Novosibirsk, June 12–14,1975)

Boris F Polkovnikov

A review is given of the papers presented at the Fourth Vavilov Conference on Nonlinear Optics, held in Novosibirsk on June 12–14, 1975. The main topics at this Conference were nonlinear processes in matter and nonlinear laser spectroscopy, laser separation of isotopes and laser chemistry, short-wavelength lasers, and phase transitions in laser fields. Seventy papers were presented at the Conference and 18 of them were read by foreign specialists.
