Abstract

A review is given of the papers presented at the Fourth Vavilov Conference on Nonlinear Optics, held in Novosibirsk on June 12–14, 1975. The main topics at this Conference were nonlinear processes in matter and nonlinear laser spectroscopy, laser separation of isotopes and laser chemistry, short-wavelength lasers, and phase transitions in laser fields. Seventy papers were presented at the Conference and 18 of them were read by foreign specialists.

A review is given of the papers presented at the now traditional (eighth in the series) Vavilov Conference on Nonlinear Optics, which took place in Akademgorodok near Novosibirsk on June 22–25, 1981. The scientific program covered the following topics: new methods and the phenomena in nonlinear laser spectroscopy and nonlinear optics, control of the motion of various microparticles (atoms, molecules, ions) by laser fields, effects of laser radiation on complex molecules (including biomolecules), and laser methods in fundamental physical experiments (in particular, in the search for parity nonconservation in atomic processes). Over 200 scientists from 12 countries participated in the Conference.

This text includes all the recent advances in the field of laser spectroscopy. Major results span from the control of matter by electromagnetic fields (trapping and coding) to high precision measurements on simple atomic systems and to quantum optics with single atoms. It includes a report of the Bose-Einstein condensation achieved by laser-cooling of rubidium atoms. Achievements in the technology of tunable sources, in particular of miniaturized solid state devices, are also reported. Most recent advances in molecular spectroscopy are illustrated with emphasis on cooled spectra, clusters and high accuracy frequency references. Topics such as atomic interferometry and microcavity quantum optics are also covered.
