Observation of photon recoil effects in single-beam absorption spectroscopy with an ultracold strontium gas

Fachao Hu, Canzhu Tan, Yuhai Jiang +2 more

We report on observing photon recoil effects in the absorption of a single monochromatic light at 689 nm through an ultracold 88Sr gas, where the recoil frequency is comparable to natural linewidth of the narrow-line transition 5s2 1S0–5s5p 3P1 in strontium. In the regime of high-saturation, the absorption profile becomes asymmetric due to the photon-recoil shift, which is of the same order as the natural linewidth. The lineshape is described by an extension of the optical Bloch equations including the momentum transfers to atoms during emission and absorption of photons. Our work reveals the photon recoil effects in a simplest single-beam absorption setting, which is of significant relevance to other applications such as saturation spectroscopy, Ramsey interferometry, and absorption imaging.

Accelerated superradiance and collective atomic recoil lasing with a two-frequency pump

Mary M. Cola, Luca Volpe, N. Piovella

We demonstrate that superradiance and collective atomic recoil lasing from cold atoms can be enhanced using a two-frequency pump with frequency difference twice the two-photon recoil frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{r}$. In the good-cavity regime the atoms behave as a three-recoil-level system, collectively scattering a single-frequency radiation mode. In the bad-cavity regime, the superradiant cascade through the different recoil momentum states is strongly accelerated. The emitted radiation shows a discrete spectrum whose harmonics are separated by $2{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{r}$ and generated by transitions between adjacent momentum levels.

Microscopic Theory of the Photon Recoil of an Atom in a Dielectric

Hao Fu, P. R. Berman

An atom recoils when it undergoes spontaneous decay. In this paper we present a microscopic calculation of the recoil of a source atom imbedded in a dielectric medium. We find that the source atom recoils with the canonical photon momentum $n\hbar k_{0,}$ where $n$ is the index of refraction and $\hbar k_{0}$ is the photon momentum calculated at the source atom atomic frequency $ω_{0}$. We also show explicitly how the energy is conserved with the photon inside the medium.

An atom recoils when it undergoes spontaneous decay. In this paper we present a microscopic calculation of the recoil of a source atom imbedded in a dielectric medium. We find that the source atom recoils with the canonical photon momentum nℏk0,n\hbar k_{0,}nℏk0, where nnn is the index of refraction and ℏk0\hbar k_{0}ℏk0 is the photon momentum calculated at the source atom atomic frequency ω0ω_{0}ω0. We also show explicitly how the energy is conserved with the photon inside the medium.
