Quantization as deformation theory

Abstract

We show that any rule for quantization of functions on the phase space of a dynamical system is equivalent to a deformation of the Poisson bracket, in the sense of Lie algebras. All Schrödinger-type quantizations are equivalent mathematically but not physically. We examine whether a quantization rule exists in which the Poisson bracket of the free Hamiltonian and any function not more than quadratic in momentum gets quantized into the commutator of the quantized versions of these two observables. We show that if the (Riemannian) configuration manifold is irreducible, this condition uniquely specifies the quantization of these functions, in the cases when it can be satisfied. However, it can only be satisfied for systems whose configuration manifolds are one-dimensional, or have vanishing Ricci tensor, or are spaces of constant curvature. Thus the condition will not serve as a general physical principle which could be invoked to fix a quantization rule.

Phase Space Quantum Mechanics

Maciej Błaszak, Ziemowit Domański

The paper develop the alternative formulation of quantum mechanics known as the phase space quantum mechanics or deformation quantization. It is shown that the quantization naturally arises as an appropriate deformation of the classical Hamiltonian mechanics. More precisely, the deformation of the point-wise product of observables to an appropriate noncommutative $\star$-product and the deformation of the Poisson bracket to an appropriate Lie bracket is the key element in introducing the quantization of classical Hamiltonian systems. The considered class of deformations and the corresponding $\star$-products contains as a special cases all deformations which can be found in the literature devoted to the subject of the phase space quantum mechanics. Fundamental properties of $\star$-products of observables, associated with the considered deformations are presented as well. Moreover, a space of states containing all admissible states is introduced, where the admissible states are appropriate pseudo-probability distributions defined on the phase space. It is proved that the space of states is endowed with a structure of a Hilbert algebra with respect to the $\star$-multiplication. The most important result of the paper shows that developed formalism is more fundamental then the axiomatic ordinary quantum mechanics which appears in the presented approach as the intrinsic element of the general formalism. The equivalence of two formulations of quantum mechanics is proved by observing that the Wigner-Moyal transform has all properties of the tensor product. This observation allows writing many previous results found in the literature in a transparent way, from which the equivalence of the two formulations of quantum mechanics follows naturally.

Deformation quantization of linear dissipative systems

V G Kupriyanov, S L Lyakhovich, A A Sharapov

A simple pseudo-Hamiltonian formulation is proposed for the linear inhomogeneous systems of ODEs. In contrast to the usual Hamiltonian mechanics, our approach is based on the use of a non-stationary Poisson bracket, i.e. the corresponding Poisson tensor is allowed to explicitly depend on time. Starting from this pseudo-Hamiltonian formulation, we develop a consistent deformation quantization procedure involving a non-stationary star-product ∗ t and an 'extended' operator of time derivative D t = ∂ t + ⋅⋅⋅, differentiating the ∗ t -product. As in the usual case, the ∗ t -algebra of physical observables is shown to admit an essentially unique (time-dependent) trace functional Tr t . Using these ingredients, we construct a complete and fully consistent quantum-mechanical description for any linear dynamical system with or without dissipation. The general quantization method is exemplified by the models of damped oscillator and radiating point charge.

The Density Manifold and Configuration Space Quantization

John Lafferty

The differential geometric structure of a Fréchet manifold of densities is developed, providing a geometrical framework for quantization related to Nelson’s stochastic mechanics. The Riemannian and symplectic structures of the density manifold are studied, and the Schrödinger equation is derived from a variational principle. By a theorem of Moser, the density manifold is an infinite dimensional homogeneous space, being the quotient of the group of diffeomorphisms of the underlying base manifold modulo the group of diffeomorphisms which preserve the Riemannian volume. From this structure and symplectic reduction, the quantization procedure is equivalent to Lie-Poisson equations on the dual of a semidirect product Lie algebra. A Poisson map is obtained between the dual of this Lie algebra and the underlying projective Hilbert space.

Minimal length scale in quantum mechanics from a deformation quantization perspective

Ziemowit Domański

Abstract We develop a deformation quantization approach to quantum mechanics that exhibits a nonzero minimal uncertainty in position through the modification of commutation relations for the operators of position and momentum. Deformation quantization is a method of quantizing a classical Hamiltonian system by suitably deforming the Poisson algebra of the system. The developed theory of deformation quantization is non-formal. An appropriate integral formula for the star-product is introduced, along with a suitable space of functions on which the star-product is well defined. A C*-algebra of observables and a space of states are constructed. Moreover, an operator representation in momentum space is presented. Finally, an example of states of maximal localization is given in terms of generalized Wigner functions.

Quantum and classical mechanics on homogeneous Riemannian manifolds

Gérard G. Emch

Starting from the axioms of quantum mechanics as formalized by the systems of imprimitivity for homogeneous Riemannian manifolds, the classical theory is derived as a consequence, complete with its phase space realized as the space of pure classical states, a generalized version of the Wigner–Moyal correspondence rule, the Jordan and Lie algebra structures of functions on the cotangent bundle, given by point-wise multiplication and Poisson bracket, and the momentum map. A comparison is also given of the quantum and classical dynamics and equilibrium statistical mechanics of free particles on compact manifolds of constant negative curvature.
