Photon statistics of a single mode of spontaneous Raman scattering in a distributed Raman amplifier

Experimental measurement of spontaneous noise statistics from a distributed Raman amplifier has been achieved with single-mode and single-photon resolution. The results agree with quantum theoretical predictions of a Bose-Einstein probability distribution. Distributed Raman amplification is becoming increasingly important in today's optical communication systems. It improves the optical signal-to-noise ratio by providing optical gain inside the transmission fiber.

Measurement of the photon statistics and the noise figure of a fiber-optic parametric amplifier

Paul L. Voss, Renyong Tang, Prem Kumar

We report measurement of the noise statistics of spontaneous parametric fluorescence in a fiber parametric amplifier with single-mode, single-photon resolution. We employ optical homodyne tomography for this purpose, which also provides a self-calibrating measurement of the noise figure of the amplifier. The measured photon statistics agree with quantum-mechanical predictions, and the amplifier's noise figure is found to be almost quantum limited.

Beam-pointing fluctuations in gain-guided amplifiers

S. J. Kuo, D. T. Smithey, M. G. Raymer

We report a measurement of the quantum-mechanical beam-pointing fluctuations in the output of a gain-guided, single-pass amplifier using stimulated Raman scattering. The experimental result is in reasonable agreement with a theoretical model that incorporates the effects of excess spontaneous noise associated with the transverse modes of a gain-guided amplifier.

The recently developed method of optical homodyne tomography (OHT) allows one to obtain the photon statistics of a single mode with single-photon resolution. Recently, we used OHT to prove the Bose Einstein distribution (BED) character of parametric fluorescence. In general, in an OHT setup, a weak signal beam is mixed on a 50/50 beamsplitter with a strong local oscillator beam of the same polarization and spatio-temporal mode. In this paper, we apply OHT to show, we believe for the first time, that ASE noise of a single mode in an EDFA is Bose-Einstein distributed.
