Two-dimensional Ising model with multispin interactions

Abstract

The two-dimensional Ising model in the rectangular lattice is generalised to include m-spin interactions in one direction and two-spin interactions in the other. This model is self-dual and the critical line is the same as in the conventional Ising model with m=2. The m=3 model is solved in a generalised mean-field approximation where the transition is first order. Using a phenomenological renormalisation group approach, approximate values of the thermal and magnetic exponents y t and y h are obtained for m=3 and m=4. The m=3 results together with symmetry arguments suggest that this model belongs to the same class of universality as the Baxter-Wu and four-state ferromagnetic Potts models. When m=4 the transition is probably first order.

One-dimensional Ising model with multispin interactions

Loïc Turban

Abstract We study the spin-1/2 Ising chain with multispin interactions K involving the product of m successive spins, for general values of m . Using a change of spin variables the zero-field partition function of a finite chain is obtained for free and periodic boundary conditions and we calculate the two-spin correlation function. When placed in an external field H the system is shown to be self-dual. Using another change of spin variables the one-dimensional Ising model with multispin interactions in a field is mapped onto a zero-field rectangular Ising model with first-neighbour interactions K and H . The 2D system, with size m × N / m , has the topology of a cylinder with helical BC. In the thermodynamic limit N / m → ∞ , m → ∞ , a 2D critical singularity develops on the self-duality line, sinh 2 K sinh 2 H = 1 .

Phase transitions in systems with multispin interactions

K. A. Penson, Rémi Jullien, Pierre M. Pfeuty

An Ising-type model including $n$-spin nearest-neighbor interactions is introduced. The ground-state properties of its Hamiltonian version are studied in one and two dimensions. The model is self-dual in one dimension. The mean-field theory indicates that for $n>{n}_{c}$ the transition may become first order. Finite-size scaling suggests that ${n}_{c}=4$ in one dimension. The critical exponents as functions of $n$ are estimated.

Blume-Emery-Griffiths-Potts model in two dimensions: Phase diagram and critical properties from a position-space renormalization group

A. Nihat Berker, Michael Wortis

The spin-1 Ising model on the square lattice with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange interactions [both bilinear ($J$) and biquadratic ($K$) and crystal-field interaction ($\ensuremath{\Delta}$) is studied via a renormalization-group transformation in position space. The phase diagram in $J$, $K$, $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ space is found to have one surface of critical phase transitions and two surfaces of first-order phase transitions. These surfaces are variously bounded by an ordinary tricritical line, an isolated critical line, and a line of critical end points. These three lines joint at a special tricritical point corresponding to the transition of the three-state Potts model. The over-all phase diagram is qualitatively similar to that obtained with the mean-field approximation, except in the vicinity of the Potts transition where a four-phase coexistence line in mean-field theory shrinks into a special tricritical point in renormalization-group theory. Symmetry considerations guide the construction of our truncated renormalization-group transformation. The global connectivity and local exponents of the thirteen separate fixed points underlying this quite complicated structure are determined. Local analysis with respect to magnetic field ($H$) and another odd interaction ($L$) is performed. A one-adjusted-parameter version of our transformation yields remarkably quantitative results, predicting the Potts transition temperature, for example, within 0.3% of the exact value.

Critical properties of an S=1 multispin coupling Ising model

Ferenc Iglói, D. Kapor, M. J. Škrinjaŕ

Strong and weak coupling series expansions are used to investigate the critical properties of the S=1 multispin coupling Ising chain in the presence of a transverse field. The order of the transition goes from second order to first order when more than three spins are coupled. According to the numerical results the two-spin and three-spin coupling models belong to the Ising and the four-state Potts universality classes, respectively. Thus the critical properties of the model do not depend on the value of the spin, even when three spins are coupled.

Self-dual cluster renormalisation-group approach for the square lattice Ising model: specific heat and magnetisation

H. O. Mártin, Constantino Tsallis

A simple renormalisation-group approach based on self-dual clusters is proposed for the two-dimensional nearest-neighbour spin- 1 / 2 Ising model on the square lattice; it reproduces the exact critical point. The authors calculate the internal energy and the specific heat for vanishing external magnetic field, spontaneous magnetisation and the thermal (y T ) and magnetic (y H ) critical exponents. The results obtained from the first four smallest cluster sizes strongly suggest the convergence towards the exact values when the cluster size increases. Even for the smallest cluster, where the calculation is very simple, the results are quite accurate, particularly in the neighbourhood of the critical point.

Phase boundary of the two-dimensional Ising model with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions in a magnetic field

Craig Rottman

The interface method is used to derive the order-disorder critical temperature of the two-dimensional Ising model on a rectangular lattice with ferromagnetic interactions in the x direction and antiferromagnetic interactions in the y direction. Employing this approximation in two different ways gives different critical temperatures ${T}_{c}$ for nonzero uniform magnetic fields H. However, both of the phase boundaries ${T}_{c}$(H) reduce to the exact results available at H=0 and T=0. .AE
