Photon statistics of multimode-laser light scattered by thermal particles

Tadashi Aoki, Katsumi Sakurai

Microscopic scattering processes are discussed for two structures of light incident on thermal particles. One is composed of two collinear light beams originating from different oscillating modes of a laser, and another is composed of two counter propagating beams originating from the same oscillating mode. A comparison of the cumulant expansions for the above two cases has allowed discerning which terms in the scattering structures led to the same statistical properties of the scattered photons. It is shown that, for the scattering of multimode-laser light, the statistical properties of scattered photons are not affected by the noncorrelating random phases of the incident laser fields but are the same as those in the case of single-mode laser light under practical scattering experiments. The factorial moments ${F}_{k}[=〈n(n\ensuremath{-}1)\ensuremath{\cdots}(n\ensuremath{-}k+1)〉]$ up to sixth order of the scattered photons were measured for various scattering situations including the above two cases, and they were found to support the theoretical results.

Quantum statistics of an atom laser in the presence of a strong input light

Jing Hui, Miao Yuan-Xiu, Yi-ang Han

Within the framework of quantum dynamical theory, we present a new method to control the quantum statistics of an atom laser by applying a powerful input light. Differing from the case in the rotating wave approximation, the non-classical properties can appear in the output atom laser beam with the evolution of time. By choosing a suitable phase of the input light, it is capable of realizing a steady and brighter output of coherent atom laser.

Statistical Properties of a Ring Laser with Injected Signal and Backscattering

Leng Feng, Zhu Shi-Qun

The statistical properties of a homogeneously broadened ring laser with an injected signal are investigated and the normalized two-mode intensity auto- and cross-correlation functions are calculated by a full saturation laser theory with backscattering. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. Further investigation reveals that the backscattering can reduce the fluctuations in the system while the full saturation effect plays a major role when the laser is operated above threshold. It is also quite important to notice that the injected signal can drive the weak mode from incoherent light to coherent light.
