Abstract

With the rapid development of mobile Internet technology and the continuous improvement of people's understanding of data security, the research on the secure transmission of information in wireless communication systems has received extensive attention. Using physical layer security technology to protect the information transmission security is not only beneficial to prevent illegal eavesdroppers from obtaining the transmitted information, but also greatly reduces the computational complexity caused by traditional encryption methods. Based on Shannon's communication theory and Wyner's wiretapping channel, this paper briefly introduces the physical layer transmission security technologies such as beamforming, artificial noise and cooperative communication, mainly analyzes massive MIMO antennas and intelligent reflecting surface, and makes a prospect summary. At the end of the paper, the open issues are identified as our future research directions.

Physical layer security techniques for data transmission for future wireless networks

Weiping Shi, Xinyi Jiang, Jinsong Hu +7 more

The broadcast nature of wireless communication systems makes wireless transmission extremely susceptible to eavesdropping and even malicious interference. Physical layer security technology can effectively protect the private information sent by the transmitter from being listened to by illegal eavesdroppers, thus ensuring the privacy and security of communication between the transmitter and legitimate users. Thus, the main design goal of physical layer security is to increase the performance difference between the link of the legitimate receiver and that of the eavesdropper using well-designed transmission schemes. The development of mobile communication presents new challenges to physical layer security research. This paper provides a survey of the physical layer security research on various promising mobile technologies from secure key generation and keyless techniques, including secure key generation, directional modulation (DM), spatial modulation (SM), covert communication, and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided communication. Finally, the future topics and the unresolved technical challenges are presented in physical layer security for mobile communications.

An Overview of Key Technologies in Physical Layer Security

Abraham Sanenga, Galefang A. Mapunda, Tshepiso Jacob +3 more

The open nature of radio propagation enables ubiquitous wireless communication. This allows for seamless data transmission. However, unauthorized users may pose a threat to the security of the data being transmitted to authorized users. This gives rise to network vulnerabilities such as hacking, eavesdropping, and jamming of the transmitted information. Physical layer security (PLS) has been identified as one of the promising security approaches to safeguard the transmission from eavesdroppers in a wireless network. It is an alternative to the computationally demanding and complex cryptographic algorithms and techniques. PLS has continually received exponential research interest owing to the possibility of exploiting the characteristics of the wireless channel. One of the main characteristics includes the random nature of the transmission channel. The aforesaid nature makes it possible for confidential and authentic signal transmission between the sender and the receiver in the physical layer. We start by introducing the basic theories of PLS, including the wiretap channel, information-theoretic security, and a brief discussion of the cryptography security technique. Furthermore, an overview of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication is provided. The main focus of our review is based on the existing key-less PLS optimization techniques, their limitations, and challenges. The paper also looks into the promising key research areas in addressing these shortfalls. Lastly, a comprehensive overview of some of the recent PLS research in 5G and 6G technologies of wireless communication networks is provided.

Physical Layer Security Techniques for Wireless Communication Systems

Manish Nagpal, Sampa Chau Pattnaik, Paramjit Baxi +3 more

One of the most important issues for secure communication in the physical layer is developing physical layer security techniques to provide confidentiality and data integrity in wireless communication systems. The properties of the physical channel are used in these methodologies to safeguard communication from eavesdropping and some other security threats. This article presents physical layer security methods that can be implemented in wireless communication systems. Artificial Noise (AN) is one of the most popular techniques. The original signal is combined with a generated by the transmitter in such a way that eavesdroppers cannot easily decode the data. Cooperative Anti-jamming: Yet another strategy for jammer localization is to employ cooperative jamming, where multiple friendly users can add noise signals over the signal in an effort to confuse potential eavesdroppers. In addition, additional technologies such as multi-input multi-output beamforming and transmit power control can further improve the security of wireless communication systems. In this regard, strategies based on game theory have been proposed as a viable alternative to enhancing physical layer security. Viewing the interaction between the transmitter, receiver, and eavesdropper as a game allows us to reveal their optimal strategies and security levels.

Key Technologies of 5G Wireless Communication Network Physical Layer Based on Information Security Early Warning Model

Yifeng He, Yinyu Wei, Jiadong Cao

With the continuous development of the fifth generation (5G) technology, the physical layer of the wireless communication network is facing new challenges. How to effectively prevent and protect these key technologies in the physical layer has a great impact on the entire network and even the entire society. Information security early warning model is a state evaluation model of important security control points in the physical layer of communication network. Security is an important indicator of communication system. Whether its security protection is effective is the basis of its survival and use. Aiming at the situation that the receiver is monitored in the transmission system, this paper has studied the safe transmission method assisted by artificial noise (AN). After the simulation experiment of the physical layer security transmission algorithm, this paper discussed the performance of different algorithms in three scenarios: transmission under non ideal channel information, one-way relay eavesdropping system, and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) untrusted relay eavesdropping system. When analyzing the relationship between the safe transmission rate of different MIMO untrusted relay antennas and the target power constraint $A_{T}, M_{y}=5, M_{d}3, M_{t}=4, A_{t}=\{5,35\}$ dB. On this basis, the optimal power distribution was realized. In the six schemes, when the power constraint $A_{T}$ increased, the security transmission rate of each scheme was improved.

Physical Layer Security for Next Generation Wireless Networks: Theories, Technologies, and Challenges

Yiliang Liu, Hsiao‐Hwa Chen, Liangmin Wang

Physical layer security (PHY-security) takes the advantages of channel randomness nature of transmission media to achieve communication confidentiality and authentication. Wiretap coding and signal processing technologies are expected to play vital roles in this new security mechanism. PHY-security has attracted a lot of attention due to its unique features and the fact that our daily life relies heavily on wireless communications for sensitive and private information transmissions. Compared to conventional cryptography that works to ensure all involved entities to load proper and authenticated cryptographic information, PHY-security technologies perform security functions without considering about how those security protocols are executed. In other words, it does not require to implement any extra security schemes or algorithms on other layers above the physical layer. This survey introduces the fundamental theories of PHY-security, covering confidentiality and authentication, and provides an overview on the state-of-the-art works on PHY-security technologies that can provide secure communications in wireless systems, along with the discussions on challenges and their proposed solutions. Furthermore, at the end of this paper, the open issues are identified as our future research directions.

Enhancing Physical Layer Security in MIMO Systems through Beamforming and Artificial Noise Techniques

Farah Nizam, Saleem Ahmed, Pardeep Kumar +4 more

Physical layer security (PLS) has grown in popularity as it guarantees secure and reliable communication between wireless devices without restricting the ability of data analysts to eavesdrop. PLS benefits from the randomization property of the wireless channel, which improves immunity and protects against many dangers of information breaches from eavesdroppers. MIMO and Massive MIMO, which use numerous antennas at the transmitter and receiver ends, are fundamental technologies for improving efficiency in 5G and future network systems. The PLS still requires a significant amount of work before it can be employed in practical systems. The interception of eavesdroppers can be made difficult by adding artificial noise. This paper focuses on the physical layer security considering maximal ratio combining, and artificial noise with beamforming techniques to further enhance the secrecy rate. The proposed work demonstrates that the use of transmitter beamforming with artificial noise can significantly improve the degree of confidentiality of information being transmitted between a transmitter and an intended receiver while making it more difficult for eavesdroppers to intercept. The simulation results in terms of bit error rate show that the proposed method has a significant impact on the error rate performance of the eavesdropper.
