Effects of magnetic field on the evolution of the wave function of a charged particle with an angular momentum

Abstract

Abstract We have calculated the effect of a magnetic field on the evolution of angular momentum eigenfunctions of a charged particle. An additional harmonic potential is supplemented to trap the wave packet. We find the probability density of the wave function is oscillating in the radial direction with a time period determined by the strength of the effective harmonic potential. When the magnetic field is along the z direction, if the initial wave function is an eigenfunction of L ˆ z , the probability density of the particle remains axis-symmetric. While for the case of an eigenfunction of L ˆ x , it is anisotropic in the x−y plane and rotates with a time period inverse proportional to the strength of the external magnetic field. We also extend the results in a phenomenological way to the case with an external magnetic field that varies harmonically in time.

Ground states and dynamics of a trapped charged particle in the magnetic field

Maciej Janowicz, Jan Mostowski

A system of two charged particles in a harmonic trap with additional magnetic field is considered. The problem is reduced to a single-particle one in relative coordinates. The ground- and lowest excited-state energies and wave functions are found. The ground state exhibits non-zero expectation value of the velocity (kinetic momentum) and the probability current density does not vanish as well. When the ground state becomes degenerate the expectation value of velocity becomes discontinuous. The effects associated with turning on of the magnetic field are studied by solving the appropriate time-dependent Schrödinger equation. No substantial differences between abrupt (discontinuous in time) and continuous switching on have been observed. Evolution of a wave packet which is initially Gaussian is also investigated. The wave packet loses its Gaussian nature and, after sufficiently large time, a system of diffractive maxima and minima is built.

Particle in a uniform magnetic field under the symmetric gauge: the eigenfunctions and the time evolution of wave packets

P. E. de Brito, H. N. Nazareno

In the present work we treat the problem of a particle in a uniform magnetic field along the symmetric gauge, so chosen since the wavefunctions present the required cylindrical symmetry. It is our understanding that by means of this work we can make a contribution to the teaching of the present subject, as well as encourage students to use computer algebra systems in solving problems of quantum mechanics. We obtained the degeneracy of the spectrum of eigenvalues in a very clear way. Through the use of a computer algebra system we show graphs of the probability density associated with different eigenvalues as well as compare such functions for some degenerate states, which helps us to visualize the physics of the problem. We also present a semiclassical model which gives a physical insight regarding the paradoxical fact that eigenfunctions associated with opposite angular momenta and different energy eigenvalues have the same probability density. Finally, by solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation we obtain the time evolution of a wave packet that at time zero was considered to be localized in a definite region of the lattice. The centroid of such a packet performs an orbit similar to that obtained in the classical treatment of a particle in a magnetic field.

Numerical Calculations and Time Evolution of Coherent States Wave Functions of Charged Oscillator in Magnetic Field

W.R. Mohsen

The wave functions of the coherent states of the charged oscillator in magnetic field are obtained via a canonical transformation. The numerical calculations of these functions are made and then the space and time plots are obtained. It was shown that these states are Gaussians distributions of widths vary periodically in an opposite way with their peaks. We interpret that is due to the mutual actions of the spreading effect of the wave packet and the reaction of the magnetic field.

The generalized harmonic potential theorem in the presence of a time-varying magnetic field

Meng-Yun Lai, Xiao‐Yin Pan

We investigate the evolution of the many-body wave function of a quantum system with time-varying effective mass, confined by a harmonic potential with time-varying frequency in the presence of a uniform time-varying magnetic field, and perturbed by a time-dependent uniform electric field. It is found that the wave function is comprised of a phase factor times the solution to the unperturbed time-dependent Schrödinger equation with the latter being translated by a time-dependent value that satisfies the classical driven equation of motion. In other words, we generalize the harmonic potential theorem to the case when the effective mass, harmonic potential, and the external uniform magnetic field with arbitrary orientation are all time-varying. The results reduce to various special cases obtained in the literature, particulary to that of the harmonic potential theorem wave function when the effective mass and frequency are both static and the external magnetic field is absent.

Wave Packets in a Magnetic Field

Long Xu, M.L. Du

A Gaussian wave packet confined to move on a plane perpendicular to a magnetic field remains a Gaussian wave packet in its time evolution. The average position and momentum follow the Ehrenfest equations which are identical to the classical Hamilton equations. A set of nonlinear equations decoupled from the Ehrenfest equation is derived for the parameters describing the time evolution of the density distribution and phases of a wave packet. Explicit solutions are then obtained when the “internal” angular momentum of the wave packet vanishes. In this case it is shown that the motion of the wave packet is a superposition of a translational motion, a rotation and a vibration.

Quantum mechanics in an axial magnetic field

J. Frenkel, John C. Taylor

We make three remarks about the quantum theory of a charged particle moving in a time-independent, uni-directional magnetic field (which we take to be parallel to the z-axis). First, when the field is uniform, we comment on the relation between the wave-function on the one hand if it is chosen to be an eigenstate of momentum (leaving aside the trivial z-dependence) and hence non-normalizable, and on the other hand if it is chosen to be an eigenstate of angular momentum. Second, we discuss the form of the wave-function when the magnetic field had a weak z-dependence. Finally, we make a short comment on the derivation of the diamagnetism of a free electron gas.
