Wave Packets in a Magnetic Field

Abstract

A Gaussian wave packet confined to move on a plane perpendicular to a magnetic field remains a Gaussian wave packet in its time evolution. The average position and momentum follow the Ehrenfest equations which are identical to the classical Hamilton equations. A set of nonlinear equations decoupled from the Ehrenfest equation is derived for the parameters describing the time evolution of the density distribution and phases of a wave packet. Explicit solutions are then obtained when the “internal” angular momentum of the wave packet vanishes. In this case it is shown that the motion of the wave packet is a superposition of a translational motion, a rotation and a vibration.

Dynamics of an Electron Wave Packet in a Quantum Dot Subjected to Magnetic Fields

Tsuyoshi Ueta

The time evolution of a Gaussian wave packet of an electron, which is confined in a quantum dot subjected to uniform magnetic fields, is analytically studied in terms of the exact Feynman kernel. The central position of the wave packet follows the classical trajectory. Although the motion of the central position is aperiodic due to its dual period, the variance of the probability density changes periodically. If the shape of the initial wave packet is the same as that of the wave function of the ground state, its shape never alters. For more general systems in which the periodic full revival of electron wave packets is realized, the characteristic of energy eigenvalues is discussed.

Wave Packet Motion in Magnetic Field

Hideo Tsuru

A motion of a Gaussian wave packet of a single electron in a uniform magnetic field is obtained by solving the time dependent Schrödinger equation analytically. The wave packet moves changing its width and central position periodically. The period of the change of the width is the same as that of the central position. The interpretation of these periodic changes in terms of the Green's function which can be derived by the path integration formulation is also discussed.

Trapping neutral particles endowed with a magnetic moment by an electromagnetic wave carrying orbital angular momentum: Semiclassical theory

Iwo Białynicki‐Birula, Tomasz Radożycki

The motion of a neutral atom endowed with a magnetic moment interacting with the magnetic field is determined from the Ehrenfest-like equations of motion. These equations for the average values of the translational and spin degrees of freedom are derived from the Schr\"odinger-Pauli wave equation, and they form a set of nine coupled nonlinear evolution equations. The numerical and analytic solutions of these equations are obtained for the combination of the rotating magnetic field of a wave carrying orbital angular momentum and a static magnetic field. The running wave traps the atom only in the transverse direction, while the standing wave traps the atom also in the direction of the beam.

Confinement and Transfer of a Two-Dimensional Wave Packet under Crossed Electric and Magnetic Fields

Hidetoshi Takagi, Mitsuru Ishida Mitsuru Ishida, Nobuhiko Sawaki

The motion of a two-dimensional Gaussian wave packet was analyzed under crossed electric and magnetic fields by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation numerically. It was found that the perpendicular magnetic field prevents the expansion of the wave packet and the in-plane electric field transfers the wave packet. The possibility of trapping and transfer of the wave packet is discussed by introducing a phenomenological decay term into the partial waves.

Motion of a Wave Packet Constructed from Landau Gauge Solutions

D. M. Thomson

The eigensolutions of the Schrödinger equation for the motion of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field depend on the choice of electromagnetic gauge. In the Landau gauge it is hard to discern a relationship between the eigensolutions and the circular or helical orbits of classical theory. In this paper a wave packet is constructed from the Landau gauge eigensolutions which simulates the classical motion in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. Some properties of the wave packet are discussed.

Rotating quantum Gaussian packets

V V Dodonov

We study two-dimensional quantum Gaussian packets with a fixed value of mean angular momentum. This value is the sum of two independent parts: the ‘external’ momentum related to the motion of the packet center and the ‘internal’ momentum due to quantum fluctuations. The packets minimizing the mean energy of an isotropic oscillator with the fixed mean angular momentum are found. They exist for ‘co-rotating’ external and internal motions, and they have nonzero correlation coefficients between coordinates and momenta, together with some (moderate) amount of quadrature squeezing. Variances of angular momentum and energy are calculated, too. Differences in the behavior of ‘co-rotating’ and ‘anti-rotating’ packets are shown. The time evolution of rotating Gaussian packets is analyzed, including the cases of a charge in a homogeneous magnetic field and a free particle. In the latter case, the effect of initial shrinking of packets with big enough coordinate-momentum correlation coefficients (followed by the well known expansion) is discovered. This happens due to a competition of ‘focusing’ and ‘de-focusing’ in the orthogonal directions.
