How Information Creates Its Observer: Emergence of the Information Observer with Regularities

Vladimir S. Lerner, Malcolm Dean

Abstract

Vladimir Lerner’s Information Macrodynamic (IMD) formalism is the first full application of John Archibald Wheeler’s “It from Bit” approach to physical Information processes. The IMD formalism accounts for the evolution of Information physics from quantum to classical regimes, showing how intelligence and Wheeler’s Observer-Participator are naturally emergent. Distinct from “digital physics” or simple coding-decoding schemes, the IMD formalism presents a continuous step-by-step physics of natural Information processes, from the first distinction to the emergence of the self-aware Information Observer.

What is the Observer generated information process?

Vladimir S. Lerner

Up to now both information and its connection to reality have not scientifically conclusive definitions neither implicit origin. They emerge in observing multiple impulses interactive yes-no actions modeling information Bits. The observed information process connects reality, information, and creates Observer. Interaction is fundamental reality building structure of Universe from quantum physics up to brain neurons interactive actions. Merging action and reaction joins probabilistic prior and posterior actions on edge of the observed predictability and begins microprocess. Its time of entanglement starts space interval composing two qubits or Bit of reversible logic in the emerging information process. The impulse interacting action curves impulse geometry creating asymmetrical logic Bit as logical Maxwell demon. With approaching probability one, the attracting interaction captures energy memorizing asymmetrical logic in information certain Bit. Such Bit is naturally extracted at minimal quality energy equivalent ln2 working as Maxwell Demon. The memorized impulse Bit and its free information self-organizes multiple Bits in triplets sructuring macroprocess. Memorized information binds reversible microprocess with irreversible information macroprocess along multidimensional observing process. The macroprocess self-forming triplet units UP attract new UP through free Information. Multiple UP adjoin hierarchical network whose free information produces new UP at higher level node and encodes triplets in multi-levels hierarchical organization. The interactive information dynamics assemble geometrical and information structures of cognition and intelligence in double spiral rotating code. Information Path Functional integrates multiple interactive dynamics in finite bits which observe and measure reality. The time and space of reality exists only as units of information as Wheeler predicted.

THIS is the Observer–System Bridge

Freddy Brugmans

This paper introduces The Informative State (THIS) as the bridge between observer and system. This framework is designed to address the fundamental problem of how classical reality emerges from quantum mechanics. We propose that the physically irreducible coupling between an observer and a system, quantified by quantum mutual information across time, forms the bridge that explains the emergence of objective facts from subjective interactions. The participatory universe theory, also known as “It from Bit” and particularly associated with physicist John Wheeler, posits that acts of observation influence what is seen as real, suggesting that the universe remains indeterminate when there is no observer. Hugh Everett’s many-worlds interpretation offers an alternative by stating that the observer is always part of the system, regardless of the nature of the observer; any entity that observes can fulfill this function. The THIS framework is introduced to represent the relationship between an observer and the observed in information extraction. The combined quantum state of the observer and the observed at any given time ensures that the observer actively contributes to the way classical information is acquired. The observed does not calculate the observation, the observer calculates what can be observed from an abstract separation between observer and observed. Wheeler assumes a constitutive role of observation in the production of reality, while our framework focuses on the active, ongoing, and quantifiable coupling between observer and system, where the observer’s informational boundaries determine what aspects of reality can be accessed. A property of a system becomes a ’fact’ for an observer when the correlation between the system’s state and the observer’s record is nearly perfect. We propose measurable criteria for THIS and outline a verification program using memory-update protocols and controlled decoherence. The paper presents an epistemological view on ontology and as such also discusses the possibilities of artificial intelligence to transcend human cognitive limits.

Physics as Information Theory

Giacomo Mauro D’Ariano

The experience from Quantum Information of the last twenty years has lead theorists to look at Quantum Theory and the whole of Physics from a different angle. A new information-theoretic paradigm is emerging, long time ago prophesied by John Archibald Wheeler with his popular coinage 'It from bit'. Theoretical groups are now addressing the problem of deriving Quantum Theory from informational principles, and similar lines are investigated in new approaches to Quantum Gravity. In my talk I will review some recent advances on these lines. The general idea synthesizing the new paradigm is that there is only Quantum Theory (without quantization rules): the whole Physics--including space-time and relativity--is emergent from quantum-information processing. And, since Quantum Theory itself is made with purely informational principles, the whole Physics must be reformulated in information-theoretical terms. The review is divided into the following parts: (a) The informational axiomatization of Quantum Theory; (b) How space-time and relativistic covariance emerge from the quantum computation; (c) What is the information-theoretical meaning of inertial mass and Planck constant, and how the quantum field emerges; (d) Observational consequences: mass-dependent refraction index of vacuum. I then conclude with some possible future research lines.

Consciousness as Information-Optimizing Participatory Extractor of Reality (CIO-PER): A Unified Information-Theoretic Framework for the Emergence of Observable Reality from a Pre-Spacetime Substrate

Martin Noirmont

This article presents a basic concept for a comprehensive, unified theoretical framework for the mechanism of consciousness by synthesizing four cornerstone advances in quantum foundations and information physics: John Archibald Wheeler’s participatory universe and “It from Bit” paradigm [1], Quantum Bayesianism (QBism) with its participatory realism [2], Melvin Vopson’s Infodynamics (encompassing the mass-energy-information equivalence principle and the second law of infodynamics) [3,4], and Wojciech Zurek’s decoherence theory together with Quantum Darwinism, which accounts for the “loss of quantumness” and the emergence of classical objectivity [5,6]. In contrast to objective-collapse models such as Penrose and Hameroff’s Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch-OR) [7], we propose that consciousness is not a secondary emergent phenomenon arising from physical processes within an already-objective spacetime but the „primary participatory agent” that actively extracts and renders the classical, observable, and subjectively experienced reality - including particles, mass, energy, frequency, and spacetime geometry itself - from a deeper, pre-spacetime, purely informational substrate we denote as Φ. A mathematically consistent model is constructed in which consciousness functions as an information-optimizing, self-referential agent within Φ. Quantum states are interpreted as an agent’s subjective Bayesian probabilities (QBism); information entropy is dynamically minimized according to the second law of infodynamics; environmental interactions select robust pointer states through redundant copying (Quantum Darwinism); and participatory measurements actualize definite “its” (Wheeler) from underlying “bits.” The Einstein–Planck–de Broglie equivalence E = mc² = hf, which implies that every massive particle possesses an internal “metronome” ticking at the Compton frequency f ≈ mc²/h, appears only as a stabilized, experienced feature „after” this participatory extraction process. The framework preserves all empirical successes of quantum mechanics while naturally accommodating a simulation-like virtuality of macroscopic reality. We derive explicit mathematical relations, testable predictions, a detailed comparison with Orch-OR, followed by an extensive discussion of potential criticisms, and - crucially - a new extension exploring how the same mechanism may enable the emergence of consciousness in advanced artificial intelligence systems, particularly agentic large language models (LLMs). The result is a physically operational, information-theoretic vision of consciousness as the co-creator of the observable cosmos.

Is information everything?

Whoever it was who first contracted the words 'binary digit' to form 'bit' can hardly have realised that he (she?) was coining a term not only for the smallest unit of information but also for the smallest unit of 'being' – or so the general relativist John Archibald Wheeler would have us believe. 'It from bit' is his declamation of the ultimate fount of significance of every physical quantity: all we can know about photons, fields, black holes – you name 'it' – depends at root, he emphasizes, on yes-or-no indications. Pursuing the implications of this observation through quantised strings, quantum measurement theory, computational representations of physical laws, information theory, thermodynamic entropy, evolution... those, he says, are routes to that happy state of perceived simplicity and beauty when we finally know the Final Answer to the question: 'How come existence?'

It And Bit

Juan Ramón González Álvarez

It is broadly believed that everything in the universe is found to be made from a few basic building blocks called fundamental particles, governed by four fundamental forces. However, physicists such as John Archibald Wheeler suggested that information is fundamental to the physics of the universe. According to this it from bit doctrine, all things physical are information-theoretic in origin. This doctrine is based in the old Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics; an interpretation which is internally inconsistent and no applicable to the cosmos as a whole. Modern consistent interpretations of quantum mechanics eliminate the old myths about measurement processes and observers' consciousness and reintroduce the idea of a wholly physical reality, invalidating the it from bit doctrine. Utilizing a new phase space formulation of quantum mechanics developed recently by the author, the concepts of bit and it are reconsidered. We introduce the new states D as quantum bits and the new Hamiltonians H as quantum its. The new concepts of it and bit introduced in this work have a well-defined and rigorous definition, unlike Wheeler's concepts. Moreover, the new concepts apply on situations where the traditional wavefunction theory does not work. The it H is not derivable from the bit D and, as a consequence, the old it from bit doctrine gets substituted by the new it and bit. After showing why the physical entropy used in the science of thermodynamics is not a measure of the ignorance of human observers, the final part of this Essay is devoted to emphasize the importance that the bit acquires in modern science when confronted to the delicious multiplicity of the far-from-equilibrium regimes, where the certainty of Newtonian and Schrodinger motion begin to fade in favour of a complex non-geometrical, 'living', conception of Nature: an it and bit conception.
