Over the past few decades, cryptography has played a pivotal role in strengthening information security, introducing groundbreaking methods to safeguard data confidentiality and integrity. Among these innovations, quantum cryptography has emerged as a rapidly evolving discipline, addressing critical challenges associated with secure communication. One of its most significant contributions is Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), a robust framework for establishing secure cryptographic keys between legitimate parties. This paper offers a detailed technical review of QKD protocols developed over the last thirty years, analyzing the fundamental principles governing key generation through quantum mechanics and advanced encryption techniques. Furthermore, it explores the interdependencies among core QKD protocol elements, proposing enhancements to strengthen the cryptosystem. Quantitative evaluations of QKD protocols are presented, with particular emphasis on runtime performance. Additionally, this paper outlines a generalized model of each reviewed protocol, grounded in robust security principles.
Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) has emerged as a revolutionary technology for secure communication, leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics to ensure the inviolability of cryptographic keys. Conventional QKD protocols often rely on centralized systems, which present challenges related to scalability, trust, and single points of failure. This review explores the security enhancements introduced by adopting a decentralized approach to QKD protocols. We analyze various decentralized QKD frameworks that eliminate the need for trusted third parties, leveraging blockchain technology and other distributed systems to enhance security, transparency, and robustness. In addition to assessing their performance, we examine how these decentralized models mitigate vulnerabilities such as key interception, node compromise, and denial-of-service attacks, which are prevalent in traditional centralized systems. Our review highlights advancements in the integration of decentralized QKD with classical cryptographic techniques, offering a comprehensive view of its potential to revolutionize secure communications in critical sectors. The decentralized approach to QKD represents a promising evolution towards more secure, scalable, and resilient quantum cryptography systems.
Abstract Cryptography is a scientific method that is used to transmit secret information. In contrast, quantum cryptography depends on physical laws to encrypt information; when the quantum computer appeared, the classic encryption method becomes inefficient. The quantum method is commonly used to distribute keys, a process called as quantum key distribution (QKD). In this paper, we consider the efficiency of the quantum method compared to classical methods. Also, we discuss the security of QKD against several attacks and provide security analysis based on probabilistic models. Additionally, the paper explains how to encrypt random numbers into a sequence of photons using a QKD system for the distribution of a key. This research demonstrates the efficiency and security of QKD in sending and distributing keys between communication parties. Thus, both the sender and the receiver would be able to obtain a security key using the quantum method rather than classical methods.
Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) which is the name of cryptography in quantum environment act as the highest developed area in quantum communication and computing technology (QCIT). \n \nQKD is inventive technology which utilize the laws of quantum to create a cryptographic share key to make the communication system secure. The unique feature of QKD assures eavesdropping detectable during quantum communications which is fascinating for a high-level secure environment. Most of the traditional cryptographic methods which we use currently are based on mathematical scheme or Computational complexity theory which are not completely safe. Using quantum cryptography has been achieved extensive steps in communication security establishment. As the information Unit has been changed from “bit” to Quantum bit (Qubit), a new element has been offered that can guarantee the shared information confidentiality between parties. The confidentiality of system is established via exchanging a secret key through a channel of quantum, the key which we use for encrypting the shared data. This structure has quantum integration which has been developed by physics law and techniques of cryptography. \n \nThis thesis has proposed a modified version of QKD protocol, this new protocol will generate a cryptographic share key for a more efficient, lower cost and secure communication between two parties (sender and Receiver). This new protocol principal is similar to BBM92, but the source of photon moved to sender instead of third-party photon generator, following steps will be executed in this Experiment: \n \n•\tObserve different categories protocols of QKD in details \n•\tThe Quantum Mechanics Visualisation Project (QuVis) is the simulation software that has been used for implementing the proposed protocol [BB84 with spin] among the other three (BBM92, B92 and BB84). \n•\tProbability ratio of error will be tested and compared for all protocols, for this experiment 100 to 5000 photons will be sent. \n \nBy Analysing collected data in this experiment, it will be determined which one of this four protocols lead the detecting of eavesdropping. Simulation software accomplishes the value of error key probability which receiver can use and should not pass over the range limit of 0.25 & 0.5.
All Classical cryptographic methods used in our life based on mathematical ideas & computational assumption are actually unsafe, so quantum cryptography is proposed nowadays Quantum key distribution (QKD) promises secure key agreement by using quantum mechanical systems. QKD will be an important part of future cryptographic infrastructures. It can provide long-term confidentiality for encrypted information without reliance on computational assumptions. Although QKD still requires authentication to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks. Firstly, In this paper At quantum key distribution protocol process is introduced. Secondly, several improvements to the basic steps of two references are reviewed because of its defects, mainly about identity authentication in order to prevent communication partners' counterfeit, including errors removing, estimating Attacker's information, secrecy enhancement, etc. At last, based upon original improvements reserved selectively, the whole process of quantum key distribution protocol after improvement & then comparison is introduced in detail.
Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) provides promising secure communication, the crucial need for online security in Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). QKD is mainly used for distribution of keys securely between two parties and is a commercially available application of Quantum Cryptography (QC). QKD has the ability to enable the authenticated users to detect unwanted attempts by the intruder in trying to gain knowledge of the secret key. Through the fundamental nature of quantum mechanics, in Principle QKD has the distinction of being, unshakable. Quantum cryptography harnesses the counterintuitive behavior of elementary particles such as photons and ensures the confidentiality of information transmitted between two parties. There are many QKD protocols that provide a secure key which include BB84 protocol, BB92 protocol, SARG04 protocol, E91 protocol, COW protocol, DPS protocol ect. In this review the trends and challenges in Quantum Key Distribution is discussed. Also the contribution of QKD towards network security is presented by analyzing its strengths and weakness.
