Abstract

In this paper, we theoretically investigate the stability of spin-wave solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates of repulsive magnons, confined by an inhomogeneous external magnetic field described by a Gaussian well. For this purpose, we use the quasi-one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation to describe the behavior of the condensate. In order to solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we used two different approaches: one analytical (variational method) and another numerical (split-step Crank-Nicolson method). The stability of the solutions and the validation of the numerical results were confirmed, respectively, through the anti-VK criterion and the virial theorem. Furthermore, the simulations described the behavior of physical quantities of interest such as chemical potential, energy per magnon and central density as a function of the nonlinearity of the model (magnon-magnon interactions). The theoretical results provide subsidies for a better understanding of the nonlinear phenomena related to the Bose-Einstein condensates of magnons in ferromagnetic films.

The stability of matter-wave solitons in 2D linear and nonlinear optical lattices

Chen Hai-Jun, Xiangfu Li

By means of variational solution and direct numerical simulation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), we have studied the stability of matter-wave solitons in two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein condensations (BECs), with 2D linear and nonlinear optical lattices (OLs). Using the static variational approach and Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion necessary for stability, we obtain the stability condition for solitons in different combinations of OL's parameters. We show that the 2D linear and nonlinear optical lattices allow us to stabilize 2D solitons for both attractive and repulsive interactions. We also study the time-evolution problems of 2D BECs, using the time-dependent variational approach and numerical solution of GPE for 2D linear and nonlinear OLs. Very good agreement between the results corresponding to both treatments is observed.

Matter-wave bright solitons in bose-einstein condensate / Abdelaziz Benseghir

A. Benseghir

We investigate the properties of modulational instability in the Salerno equation in quasi-one dimension in Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We analyzed the regions of modulational instability of nonlinear plane waves and determine the conditions of its existence in BEC. The existence and stability of strongly localized modes in discrete media is investigated with the framework of the Salerno model by using a linear analysis method. The regions of stability and instability are determined. Also the existence of localized modes for different values of parameters is shown numerically by homoclinic orbits intersection method. The response of Bose–Einstein condensates is studied with strong dipole–dipole atomic interactions to periodically varying perturbation. The dynamics is governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation with an additional nonlinear term, corresponding to nonlocal dipolar interactions. A mathematical model, based on the variational approximation, has been developed and applied to study parametric excitation of the condensates due to coefficient of nonlocal nonlinearity varying periodically. The model predicts the waveform of solitons in dipolar condensates and describes their small amplitude dynamics quite accurately. Theoretical predictions are verified by numerical simulations of the nonlocal Gross–Pitaevskii equation and a good agreement between them is found. The results can lead to better understanding of the properties of ultra-cold quantum gases, such as 52Cr, 164Dy and 168Er, where the long-range dipolar atomic interactions dominate the usual contact interactions. Dynamics of a matter wave soliton bouncing on the reflecting surface (atomic mirror) under the effect of gravity has been studied by analytical and numerical means. The iv analytical description is based on the variational approach. Resonant oscillations of the soliton's center of mass and width, induced by appropriate modulation of the atomic scattering length and the slope of the linear potential are analyzed. In numerical experiments, we observe the Fermi type acceleration of the soliton when the vertical position of the reflecting surface is periodically varied in time. Analytical predictions are compared with the results of numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and a qualitative agreement between them is found.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates near Feshbach resonance in external potential

Xiao-Fei Zhang, Xinghua Hu, Deng‐Shan Wang +2 more

We review our recent theoretical advances in the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates with tunable interactions using Feshbach resonance and external potential. A set of analytic and numerical methods for Gross-Pitaevskii equations are developed to study the nonlinear dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates. Analytically, we present the integrable conditions for the Gross-Pitaevskii equations with tunable interactions and external potential, and obtain a family of exact analytical solutions for one- and two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in one and two-dimensional cases. Then we apply these models to investigate the dynamics of solitons and collisions between two solitons. Numerically, the stability of the analytic exact solutions are checked and the phenomena, such as the dynamics and modulation of the ring dark soliton and vector-soliton, soliton conversion via Feshbach resonance, quantized soliton and vortex in quasi-two-dimensional are also investigated. Both the exact and numerical solutions show that the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates can be effectively controlled by the Feshbach resonance and external potential, which offer a good opportunity for manipulation of atomic matter waves and nonlinear excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates.

Exact soliton solutions and nonlinear modulation instability in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Lu Li, Zai-Dong Li, Boris A. Malomed +2 more

We find one-, two-, and three-component solitons of the polar and ferromagnetic (FM) types in the general (nonintegrable) model of a spinor (three-component) model of the Bose-Einstein condensate, based on a system of three nonlinearly coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The stability of the solitons is studied by means of direct simulations and, in a part, analytically, using linearized equations for small perturbations. Global stability of the solitons is considered by means of an energy comparison. As a result, ground-state and metastable soliton states of the FM and polar types are identified. For the special integrable version of the model, we develop the Darboux transformation (DT). As an application of the DT, analytical solutions are obtained that display full nonlinear evolution of the modulational instability of a continuous-wave state seeded by a small spatially periodic perturbation. Additionally, by dint of direct simulations, we demonstrate that solitons of both the polar and FM types, found in the integrable system, are structurally stable; i.e., they are robust under random changes of the relevant nonlinear coefficient in time.

Solitons in spin-orbit-coupled spin-2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Nian-Sheng Wan, Yue Li, Ju-Kui Xue

We investigate the different types of matter-wave solitons in spin-orbit-coupled spin-2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. Using mean-field theory and adopting the multiscale perturbation method, the original five-component Gross-Pitaevskii spin-orbit-coupled spin-2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate model can be reduced to a single effective nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which allows us to find analytical soliton solutions of this system. In this way, for different regimes of the spin-orbit coupling, Raman coupling, and interatomic interactions, we find approximate bright and dark soliton solutions. Particularly, the type of solitons depends on the dispersion properties of the system. When the lowest-energy band has a single-well structure, we find there only exist positive mass bright or dark solitons due to the dispersion coefficient of effective nonlinear Shrödinger equation always positive. However, when the lowest-energy band has a double-well structure, there will appear positive (negative) mass bright or dark solitons because the sign of the dispersion coefficient can be positive (negative) under different momentum. We employ direct numerical simulation of the original five-component Gross-Pitaevskii equations to confirm the analytical results.

Reexamination of dynamical stabilization of matter-wave solitons

A. P. Itin, Tōru Morishita, Shinichi Watanabe

We consider dynamical stabilization of Bose-Einstein condensates by time-dependent modulation of the scattering length. The problem has been studied before by several methods: Gaussian variational approximation, the method of moments, the method of modulated Townes soliton, and the direct averaging of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We summarize these methods and find that the numerically obtained stabilized solution has a different configuration than that assumed by the theoretical methods (in particular a phase of the wave function is not quadratic with $r$). We show that there is presently no clear evidence for stabilization in a strict sense, because in the numerical experiments only metastable (slowly decaying) solutions have been obtained. In other words, neither numerical nor mathematical evidence for a new kind of soliton solutions has been revealed so far. The existence of the metastable solutions is nevertheless an interesting and complicated phenomenon on its own. We try some non-Gaussian variational trial functions to obtain better predictions for the critical nonlinearity ${g}_{cr}$ for metastabilization but other dynamical properties of the solutions remain difficult to predict.
