Abstract

Quantum computing is widely considered a frontier of interdisciplinary research and involves fields ranging from computer science to physics and from chemistry to engineering. On the one hand, the stochastic essence of quantum physics results in the random nature of quantum computing; thus, there is an important role for statistics to play in the development of quantum computing. On the other hand, quantum computing has great potential to revolutionize computational statistics and data science. This article provides an overview of the statistical aspect of quantum computing. We review the basic concepts of quantum computing and introduce quantum research topics such as quantum annealing and quantum machine learning, which require statistics to be understood.

When Quantum Computation Meets Data Science: Making Data Science Quantum

Yazhen Wang

Quantum computation and quantum information have attracted considerable attention on multiple frontiers of scientific fields ranging from physics to chemistry and engineering, as well as from computer science to mathematics and statistics. Data science combines statistical methods, computational algorithms, and domain science information to extract knowledge and insights from big data, and to solve complex real-world problems. While it is well-known that quantum computation has the potential to revolutionize data science, much less has been said about the potential of data science to advance quantum computation. Yet because the stochasticity of quantum physics renders quantum computation random, data science can play an important role in the development of quantum computation and quantum information. This article gives an overview of quantum computation and promotes interplay between quantum science and data science. Overall, it advocates for the development of quantum data science for advancing quantum computation and quantum information.

Quantum Computation and Quantum Information

Yazhen Wang

Quantum computation and quantum information are of great current interest in computer science, mathematics, physical sciences and engineering. They will likely lead to a new wave of technological innovations in communication, computation and cryptography. As the theory of quantum physics is fundamentally stochastic, randomness and uncertainty are deeply rooted in quantum computation, quantum simulation and quantum information. Consequently quantum algorithms are random in nature, and quantum simulation utilizes Monte Carlo techniques extensively. Thus statistics can play an important role in quantum computation and quantum simulation, which in turn offer great potential to revolutionize computational statistics. While only pseudo-random numbers can be generated by classical computers, quantum computers are able to produce genuine random numbers; quantum computers can exponentially or quadratically speed up median evaluation, Monte Carlo integration and Markov chain simulation. This paper gives a brief review on quantum computation, quantum simulation and quantum information. We introduce the basic concepts of quantum computation and quantum simulation and present quantum algorithms that are known to be much faster than the available classic algorithms. We provide a statistical framework for the analysis of quantum algorithms and quantum simulation.

Quantum Computing for Data Scientists and Quantum Machine Learning

Bandla Umesh Chandra -

Quantum computation and quantum information have sparked tremendous interest across a wide range of scientific disciplines, from physics to chemistry and engineering, as well as computer science, mathematics, and statistics. Data science is the application of statistical methodologies, computer algorithms, and domain scientific data to extract knowledge and insights from large amounts of data and solve complicated real-world issues. As a result, quantum machine learning has carved itself a distinct niche in the world of computers. When the potential of quantum computing characteristics is employed for machine learning, quantum technology advances to an advanced degree. When quantum computing capabilities are incorporated into standard methods, they give extraordinary parallel computing power for addressing complicated problems. The core of this work is a comparison of the fundamental principles of quantum computing and their superiority over traditional computing. This paper discusses application-based algorithms including QSVM, QPCA, and Q-KNN, as well as Grover's algorithm, the most common and foundational quantum machine learning technique.

Quantum Computing Applications in Data Science: A Comprehensive Survey

Gnanasankaran Natarajan, Shirley Chellathurai Pon Anna Bai, Ahamed Labbe Hanees +2 more

Quantum computing is an upcoming paradigm that has been in the transformation process in data science in the light of quantum physics. On that account, the present chapter delivers in-depth details on how quantum phenomena like superposition and entanglement could be brought to bear on data-intensive problems that are beyond classical computational means. Basic concepts such as qubits, gates, and circuits are studied with an emphasis on parallelism and interference to speed up computations. They look at the major applications for data science with a focus on 32 promising quantum machine-learning techniques: quantum support vector machines and quantum neural networks that promise a quantum speed-up in classifying and regressing data sets. It also looks at quantum methods for clustering, dimensionality reduction, and combinatorial optimization, including quantum annealing and the quantum approximate optimization algorithm, to name just a few, with respect to speed and accuracy. Therefore, quantum simulation is strongly promoted for the simulation of complicated systems, which are of interest, for example, in chemistry, materials science, and drug discovery. Besides, some shelves are kept for an overview of the interdisciplinary approaches of quantum computing with big data analytics and also with cryptography, including quantum-safe encryption. The hardware scalability stands as the main challenge, while the prime concern is error correction. Other than these issues, advances in investigating and developing are schema concepts for unleashing the power of quantum computing to change data science.
