Abstract

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a promising technology for securing future communications. Over the past thirty years, QKD developed from a theoretical idea to a mature technology that can provide Mbit/s key rates and that can be established over several hundred (up to a few thousand) of kilometres. One of the next challenges for this technology is proving its suitability for real-world operation scenarios. In this talk we will discuss recent QKD deployments executed in UK and Europe by Toshiba in collaboration with other partners, which demonstrate that the development of a stable, high performance, and widespread quantum communication network is in reach with current technology.

A Review on Quantum Key Distribution for Wireless Networks: Current Status and Future Prospects

Mohammed Alghamdi

As wireless networks become increasingly integral to modern communication infrastructures, the need for robust security mechanisms to protect sensitive information has never been more critical. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) presents a revolutionary approach to secure communications by leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics to ensure the theoretical unbreakability of cryptographic keys. This study provides a comprehensive review of the current status of QKD technologies within the context of wireless networks, utilizing secondary data sources to analyze recent advancements, implementations, and challenges. The paper begins by outlining the fundamental principles of QKD and its superiority over classical cryptographic methods. It then examines recent developments in QKD protocols and their adaptability to wireless environments, highlighting successful case studies and experimental trials. Key challenges, including technological limitations, integration hurdles with existing network infrastructures, and cost considerations, are discussed in detail. The review also explores emerging trends and innovations, such as hybrid QKD systems and satellite-based implementations, which promise to expand the applicability and feasibility of QKD in wireless networks. Finally, the study delineates future prospects and potential research directions, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to overcome existing limitations and fully realize the potential of QKD in enhancing wireless network security.

Towards the industrialisation of quantum key distribution in communication networks: A short survey

Ruiqi Liu, Georgi Gary Rozenman, Neel Kanth Kundu +2 more

Abstract Quantum information and communication technology will lead us to the new era of ultra‐fast and absolute‐secure networks. With the emergence of quantum supremacy on the horizon, the security of various classical encryption systems soon may be deemed obsolete. As a remedy, quantum key distribution (QKD) is proposed as a novel quantum‐based secret keys exchange, which is developed to solve the problems of legacy encryption. It is anticipated that QKD will provide stronger security for future communication systems even in the presence of malicious quantum attacks. As the QKD research and development is getting mature, the theoretical use cases of QKD in various industries are proliferating. In this treatise, we summarise the potential applications of QKD for future communication technology while highlighting the ongoing standardisation efforts essential for the sustainability and reliability of the near‐future deployment. Additionally, we also present the various challenges faced by both discrete variable and continuous variable QKD schemes hindering their widespread implementation into our future communication networks.

Quantum networks have been a reality for several years, with quantum key distribution as their primary application. However, several factors still limit their widespread adoption as a user-ready technology. In this work, we present four real-world experiments that demonstrate concrete progress toward the deployment of quantum networks. These field trials showcase the ability to interconnect different countries, interface diverse infrastructures, and exploit quantum properties and innovative technologies to boost key rates and enable coexistence with classical communication channels. Together, they highlight a viable path toward scalable, interoperable, and high-performance quantum-secured communication.

Protocols, Technologies, and Global Deployment Challenges for Quantum Key Distribution

Wael Maged Badawy

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) offers a revolutionary method for achieving information-theoretic security in communication systems by leveraging quantum mechanical principles. With foundational protocols like BB84 and newer innovations such as phase-matching and device-independent QKD, the field has rapidly progressed from theoretical constructs to real-world prototypes. Recent advancements in integrated photonics, high-speed key generation, and satellite-based systems suggest a transformative potential for global cybersecurity infrastructure. However, significant challenges remain in extending secure communication distances, ensuring practical implementation security, reducing cost and size of components, and integrating QKD into existing network architectures. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art in QKD, discusses emerging trends such as chip-based and layered QKD systems, evaluates satellite and free-space deployments, and examines the practical limitations and solutions for long-distance and high-rate secure communications. It concludes by highlighting future directions including standardization, hybrid classical-quantum infrastructures, and software-defined QKD networks.
