Abstract

Abstract Quantum information and communication technology will lead us to the new era of ultra‐fast and absolute‐secure networks. With the emergence of quantum supremacy on the horizon, the security of various classical encryption systems soon may be deemed obsolete. As a remedy, quantum key distribution (QKD) is proposed as a novel quantum‐based secret keys exchange, which is developed to solve the problems of legacy encryption. It is anticipated that QKD will provide stronger security for future communication systems even in the presence of malicious quantum attacks. As the QKD research and development is getting mature, the theoretical use cases of QKD in various industries are proliferating. In this treatise, we summarise the potential applications of QKD for future communication technology while highlighting the ongoing standardisation efforts essential for the sustainability and reliability of the near‐future deployment. Additionally, we also present the various challenges faced by both discrete variable and continuous variable QKD schemes hindering their widespread implementation into our future communication networks.

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and the Future of Secure Communications

Godwin Olaoye

As digital communication continues to expand across critical infrastructures, ensuring data security has become more challenging in the face of advancing computational capabilities, especially with the anticipated rise of quantum computers. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) presents a revolutionary approach to secure communications by leveraging the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, such as superposition and entanglement, to enable the secure exchange of cryptographic keys. Unlike classical encryption methods that rely on computational complexity, QKD ensures unconditional security, as any attempt to intercept the key disturbs the quantum state, revealing the presence of eavesdroppers. This paper explores the current developments in QKD protocols, including BB84 and E91, as well as practical challenges in implementation, such as distance limitations and hardware requirements. Furthermore, it discusses recent advancements in satellite-based QKD, integrated photonics, and quantum networks, highlighting their potential to reshape the landscape of secure global communication. The integration of QKD into future communication infrastructure is positioned to be a cornerstone of post-quantum cryptography, making it a vital technology in the era of quantum computing.

Quantum Key Distribution for Sustainable and Secure Communication: Opportunities and Challenges

Shashank Thakur

This research paper offers an in-depth analysis of the potential benefits of quantum key distribution (QKD) to provide secure communication channels. The limitations of classical cryptography are explored in detail, highlighting the need for alternative approaches to mitigate against the growing sophistication of cyber threats. The advantages of QKD, including its absolute security and ability to detect eavesdropping, are also extensively discussed, along with successful case studies of QKD deployments and critical lessons learned from these initiatives. Despite its potential advantages, the paper also acknowledges the challenges and limitations of practically implementing QKD in its scalability, cost, interoperability, susceptibility to quantum attacks, and the importance of investment in research and development to accelerate progress in this field. Additionally, the paper examines successful implementations of QKD in real-life scenarios. The potential applications of QKD in various sectors, such as government and military, healthcare, and finance, are highlighted. The regulatory and legal challenges surrounding using QKD protocol encryption, including the need for licensing and approval, are also briefly discussed. In conclusion, the paper discusses future opportunities and challenges for quantum cryptography and QKD in achieving sustainable and secure communication and the prospects of practical implementation of QKD. To address the challenges and promote QKD deployment in sustainable communication networks, this paper recommends increasing funding for continuing QKD research and development; international collaboration between academia and industry; stakeholder engagement to ensure QKD's safe, secure, and ethical deployment; and the incentivization of QKD deployment in critical infrastructure. Additionally, governments should prioritize QKD research and education programs to create a skilled workforce in developing and deploying QKD technology. Overall, the findings of this research demonstrate the need for more research, development, and policy recommendations to enable the practical deployment of QKD in sustainable communication networks and ensure their security and resilience.
