When a light beam interacts with Kerr medium inside an optical cavity, its quantum fluctuations are squeezed.1 One can show that perfect squeezing can be obtained close to the turning points of the bistability curve. In order to implement such a scheme, one needs perfect Kerr media (with no losses, infinite frequency bandwidth and no excess noise) that are not available to date.2 We study here a new kind of Kerr medium, in which the nonlinearity has a mechanical origin: if a mirror is free to move, the radiation pressure will induce a coupling between its position and the intensity of the light beam, thus modifying the optical path in an intensity-dependent way.

A SCALING LAW FOR AMPLITUDE-SQUARED SQUEEZING IN KERR EFFECT

Hari Prakash, Pankaj Kumar

We study amplitude-squared squeezing in interaction of coherent light with a nonlinear Kerr medium modelled as an anharmonic oscillator with interaction Hamiltonian H = ½ λ a +2 a 2, where λ is proportional to χ(3) of the nonlinear medium and a is annihilation operator for the interacting field. We find the squeezing parameter S ( τ, r ) in terms of a dimensionless interaction time τ = λ t and Kerr parameter r , which is product of, τ and the average number of photons and obtain almost complete amplitude-squared squeezing (i.e., S ≈ 0) for very small interaction time and very large intensity of the interacting light. We optimize squeezing parameter S ( τ, r ) by an analytic estimation assuming high intensity of the interacting light and realistic values of Kerr nonlinearity following J.Bajer et al. [Czech. J. Phy. 52, 1313 (2002)] and obtain a scaling law for optimal amplitude-squared squeezing with minimum value S min , at r = r min for a given τ. The validity of the scaling law is checked numerically and analytically in the region of realistic values of Kerr nonlinearity and intensity of the interacting light.

Light squeezing in the system of light field interacting with the V-type three-level atom via intensity-dependent coupling in Kerr medium

Huang Chun-Jia

The time evolution of Light squeezing in the system of single-mode field interacting with V-type three-level atom via intensity-dependent coupling in Kerr medium is studied by means of the quantum theory. The effects of the coupling constant χ and the initial average photon numbers on the squeezing are discussed by the method of the numerical calculations. The result shows that Kerr effect has decreased the atomic dipole squeezing in various degrees the Proper initial average photon numbers be propitious to the squeezing of light.
