Abstract

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) protocol can remove all the loopholes of the detection devices and, thus, has attracted much attention. Based on the technique of single-photon interference, we propose a modified MDI-QKD protocol with phase post-selection. We prove the security of the announcement of the private phases in the X basis and show how to apply the phase post-selection method to the double-scanning four-intensity MDI-QKD protocol. The numerical results show that the phase post-selection method can significantly improve the key rates at all distances. In the double-scanning method, two parameters need to be scanned in the calculation of the final key rate, and the global parameter optimization is pretty time-consuming. We propose an accelerated method that can greatly reduce the running time of the global parameter optimization program. This makes the method practically useful in an unstable channel.

Experimental measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution with the double-scanning method

Yi-Peng Chen, Jing-Yang Liu, Ming-Shuo Sun +4 more

The measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) can be immune to all detector side-channel attacks. Moreover, it can be easily implemented combining with the matured decoy-state methods under current technology. It, thus, seems a very promising candidate in practical implementation of quantum communications. However, it suffers from a severe finite-data-size effect in most existing MDI-QKD protocols, resulting in relatively low key rates. Recently, Jiang et al. [ Phys. Rev. A 103 , 012402 ( 2021 ). PLRAAN 1050-2947 10.1103/PhysRevA.103.012402 ] proposed a double-scanning method to drastically increase the key rate of MDI-QKD. Based on Jiang et al. ’s theoretical work, here we for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, implement the double-scanning method into MDI-QKD and carry out corresponding experimental demonstration. With a moderate number of pulses of 10 10 , we can achieve 150 km secure transmission distance, which is impossible with all former methods. Therefore, our present work paves the way toward practical implementation of MDI-QKD.

Dual-paramter-scanning-based quantum- memory- assisted measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution protocol

Chang LIU, Mingshuo SUN, Yizhen LUO +3 more

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) protocol can effectively resist all possible attacks targeting the measurement devices in a quantum key distribution (QKD) system, thus exhibiting high security. However, due to the protocol’s high sensitivity to channel attenuation, its key generation rate and transmission distance are significantly limited in practical applications. To improve the performance of MDI-QKD, researchers have proposed quantum-memory (QM)-assisted MDI-QKD protocol, which has enhanced the protocol's performance to a certain extent. Nevertheless, under finite-size conditions where the total number of transmitted pulses is limited, accurately estimating the relevant statistical parameters is still a challenge. As a result, existing QM-assisted MDI-QKD schemes still encounters issues such as low key rates and limited secure transmission distances. To solve these problems, this work proposes a novel improved finite-size QM-assisted MDI-QKD protocol. By utilizing quantum memories to temporarily store early-arriving pulses and release them synchronously, the protocol effectively reduces the influence caused by channel asymmetry. Additionally, the protocol introduces a four-intensity decoy-state method to improve the estimation accuracy of single-photon components. Meanwhile, to mitigate the influence of finite-length effects on QM schemes, the proposed protocol combines a collective constraint model and a double-scanning algorithm to jointly estimate scanning error counts and vacuum-related counts. This approach enhances the estimation accuracy of the single-photon detection rate and phase error rate under finite-size conditions, thereby significantly improving the secure key rate of the MDI-QKD system. Simulation results show that under the same experimental conditions, compared with the existing QM-assisted three-intensity decoy-state MDI-QKD protocol and the four-intensity decoy-state MDI-QKD protocol based on Heralded Single-photon Source (HSPS), the proposed protocol extends the secure transmission distance by more than 30 km and 100 km, respectively. This proves that under the same parameter settings, the proposed scheme exhibits significant advantages in both key rate and secure transmission distance. Therefore, this research provides important theoretical references and valuable benchmarks for developing long-distance, high-security quantum communication networks.

One-sided measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution

Wen-Fei Cao, Yi-Zheng Zhen, Yu-Lin Zheng +4 more

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) protocol was proposed to remove all the detector side channel attacks, while its security relies on the trusted encoding systems. Here we propose a one-sided MDI-QKD (1SMDI-QKD) protocol, which enjoys detection loophole-free advantage, and at the same time weakens the state preparation assumption in MDI-QKD. The 1SMDI-QKD can be regarded as a modified MDI-QKD, in which Bob's encoding system is trusted, while Alice's is uncharacterized. For the practical implementation, we also provide a scheme by utilizing coherent light source with an analytical two decoy state estimation method. Simulation with realistic experimental parameters shows that the protocol has a promising performance, and thus can be applied to practical QKD applications.

Higher key rate of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution through joint data processing

Cong Jiang, Zong‐Wen Yu, Xiao-Long Hu +1 more

We propose a method named as double-scanning method to improve the key rate of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) drastically. In the method, two parameters are scanned simultaneously to tightly estimate the counts of single-photon pairs and the phase-flip error rate jointly. Numerical results show that the method in this work can improve the key rate by $35%--280%$ in a typical experimental setup. Besides, we study the optimization of MDI-QKD protocol with all parameters including the source parameters and failure probability parameters, over symmetric channel or asymmetric channel. Compared with the optimized results with only the source parameters, the all-parameter-optimization method could improve the key rate by about $10%$.

Phase-encoded measurement device independent quantum key distribution without a shared reference frame

Zhuo-Dan Zhu, Zhao Shang-Hong, Dong Chen +1 more

In this paper, a phase-encoded measurement device independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) protocol without a shared reference frame is presented, which can generate secure keys between two parties while the quantum channel or interferometer introduces an unknown and slowly time-varying phase. The corresponding secret key rate and single photons bit error rate is analysed, respectively, with single photons source (SPS) and weak coherent source (WCS), taking finite-key analysis into account. The numerical simulations show that the modified phase-encoded MDI-QKD protocol has apparent superiority both in maximal secure transmission distance and key generation rate while possessing the improved robustness and practical security in the high-speed case. Moreover, the rejection of the frame-calibrating part will intrinsically reduce the consumption of resources as well as the potential security flaws of practical MDI-QKD systems.

Time-Bin Phase-Encoding Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution with Four Single-Photon Detectors

Guang‐Zhao Tang, Shi‐Hai Sun, Huan Chen +2 more

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) eliminates all loopholes on detection. Previous experiments of time-bin phase-encoding MDI-QKD allow a factor of 3/4 loss in the final key for the incapability of identifying two successive detection events by a single photon detector. Here we propose a new scheme to realize the time-bin phase-encoding MDI-QKD. The polarization states are used to generate the time bins and the phase-encoding states. The factor of loss in the final key is eliminated by using four single photon detectors at the measurement site. We show the feasibility of our scheme with a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration. The phase reference frame is rotated extremely slowly with only passive stabilization measures. The quantum bit error rate can reach 0.8% in the Z-basis and 26.2% in the X-basis.
