Abstract

Abstract A study of the absorption spectrum of a weak-probe beam irradiating a two-level quantum emitter with broken inversion symmetry driven by external monochromatic high-frequency electromagnetic (e.g. laser) field and damped by squeezed vacuum reservoir with finite bandwidth was carried out for the case of the squeezed vacuum source being represented by a non-degenerate parametric oscillator below threshold. It was shown that this atom-driving-field system can either amplify or absorb weak probe electromagnetic radiation beam of much lower frequency than the frequency of the driving field. The shape of the absorption and amplification spectra can be controlled by the degree of the squeezed vacuum source degeneration and by the phase of the squeezing, while the switching between these two modes of operation can only be controlled by the phase of the squeezing.

Low-frequency fluorescence spectrum of a laser driven polar quantum emitter damped by squeezed vacuum with finite bandwidth

N. N. Bogolyubov, Andrey Vladimirovich Soldatov

Abstract A two-level quantum emitter with broken inversion symmetry driven by external semiclassical monochromatic high-frequency electromagnetic (e.g., laser) field and damped by squeezed vacuum reservoir with finite bandwidth is presented. The squeezed vacuum source is assumed to be either degenerate parametric oscillator (DPO) or a non-degenerate parametric oscillator (NDPO). It is shown that the shape of low-frequency fluorescence spectrum of the emitter can be effectively alternated by controlling the degree of the squeezed vacuum source degeneration and phase of the squeezing.

Electromagnetic radiation amplification by means of a driven two-level system damped by broadband squeezed vacuum reservoir

N. N. Bogolyubov, Andrey Vladimirovich Soldatov

Abstract It is shown that a two-level quantum system with broken inversion symmetry possessing dipole moment operator with permanent non-equal diagonal matrix elements, driven by external semiclassical monochromatic high-frequency electromagnetic (laser) field and damped by broadband squeezed vacuum reservoir can amplify or absorb weak probe electromagnetic radiation field of much lower frequency depending on the reference phase of the squeezed field. Varying the degree of squeezing allows to alter the magnitude of the absorption or amplification rate.

Asymmetric probe-absorption spectrum and amplification without population inversion in a squeezed vacuum

Z. Ficek, William Smyth, S. Swain

A comprehensive study is made of the absorption spectrum of a weak-probe beam irradiating a two-level atom damped by a broadband squeezed vacuum and driven by a strong laser field. We show that for a resonant driving field whose phase does not coincide with the principal directions of the squeezing ellipse, the absorption spectrum is asymmetric and exhibits absorption-emission profiles at the Rabi sidebands. We find that this feature arises from unequal populations of the dressed states of the system, which occur when all components of the Bloch vector are coupled to the driving field. A symmetric spectrum with dispersionlike profiles at the Rabi sidebands is revealed for an off-resonant driving field. Furthermore, the spectrum may exhibit an emission profile at the central frequency, signifying an amplification of the probe beam. We point out that the amplification at the central component is not attributed to population inversion in both the atomic bare states and in the dressed atomic states. We find that the amplification originates from the coherent population oscillations and is impossible in the absence of the squeezed vacuum. In addition, we examine how these features are affected by the detuning of the driving field and an imperfect squeezed vacuum.

Probe absorption spectra for driven atomic systems in a narrow bandwidth squeezed vacuum

M. Bosticky, Z. Ficek, Bryan J. Dalton

The behavior of a three level atom in a cascade configuration with the lower transition coherently driven and also coupled to a narrow bandwidth squeezed vacuum field is studied. A master equation treatment based on dressed atom states is used and expressions for probe absorption spectra are obtained via linear response theory and the quantum regression theorem. The expressions obtained also apply to the broad bandwidth squeezed vacuum case. Numerical studies of the modifications caused by the finite squeezed vacuum bandwidth to the Mollow and Autler-Townes probe absorption spectra are made for the case where the squeezed vacuum field center frequency and the driving laser frequency coincide and where upper transition relaxation terms are ignored. The squeezed vacuum source is assumed to be a degenerate parametric amplifier for the numerical calculations. Cases where the driving laser is resonant and detuned are examined. The spectral features are sensitively dependent on the phase of the squeezed vacuum field for a given driving laser phase. Dispersive features in the Mollow probe absorption spectrum can become absorptive, and vice versa. It is found in the probe absorption spectra that for certain choices of the squeezed vacuum phase lines narrower than for the broadband squeezed vacuum are obtained in the finite bandwidth situation. In both the Mollow and Autler-Townes spectra features narrower than for the normal vacuum case are obtained when the laser field is detuned, and in the Autler-Townes case this occurs for resonance also. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

EM Field Frequency Down-Conversion in a Quantum Two-Level System Damped by Squeezed Vacuum Reservoir

Nikolay N. Bogolubov, Andrey Vladimirovich Soldatov

Abstract Down-conversion of high-frequency EM field in a simple quantum two-level system (also known as two-level atom) with broken inversion symmetry driven by a coherent laser field and damped by a squeezed vacuum reservoir is analyzed. It is shown that the squeezing leads to broadening of the low-frequency radiative peak in the fluorescence spectrum of the system. At the same time, changing the reference phase of the squeezed field and the degree of squeezing allows to manipulate the shape of this peak.

Absorption Spectrum of a Driven Two-Level Atom in a Tunable Cavity with Injected Squeezed Vacuum

Gao‐xiang Li, Huang Guang-ming, PENG JIN-SHENG

The absorption spectrum of a driven two-level atom in a frequency tunable cavity with injected squeezed vacuum is investigated. The line shape of the spectra depends on the relative phase between the driving field and the squeezed vacuum, and the frequency detuning between the driving field and the cavity mode. Line narrowing and probe gain can occur and be enhanced by adjusting the phase and detuning.
