Abstract

The conventional radar theory relies on the classical electromagnetic wave theory to run. On the contrary, a quantum radar will relie on the quantum mechanic theory to run. A quantum radar that uses the quantum illumination based on photon entanglement enables to get a better detection sensitivity. In this paper, we highlight the influence of the propagation environment on the quantum illumination radar scheme. Our approach consists in describing the quantum information evolution inside the radar and the entanglement rate with a mathematical parameter which represents the interaction strength of the propagation medium on the quantum system used by the radar.

Quantum Illumination Radar Using Polarization States of Photons in Atmosphere: Quantum Information Approach

Sylvain Borderieux, Arnaud Coatanhay, Ali Khenchaf

The quantum illumination radar uses pairs of entangled photons to enhance the detection sensitivity of a reflecting target. In this paper, we worked on a quantum illumination radar using a pair of entangled photons in polarization in the microwave frequency range in the atmosphere. We studied the quantum information evolution modeling the propagation of a photon in the atmosphere while building two binary decision strategies for the QI radar. We focused on the quantum information evolution showing that the quantum discord representing quantum correlations beyond entanglement could represent an interesting resource to explore for the subject of quantum radar. In addition, we made an approximative estimation of the entanglement survival distance in the atmosphere. Results showed that an optimization should be found to favour the survival of quantum correlations or the signal-to-noise ratios calculated with the binary decision strategy.

Quantum radar based on the mechanism of quantum physics and the quantum information is a new sensing technology that was developed to solve technology bottleneck of classic radar. Especially, The Quantum illumination based on entanglement light beam could overcome noise and information loss. In this paper, the principle of quantum radar is introduced in detail, and the quantum illumination radar scheme using entangled photons is discussed. Then, target detection method based on entangled photons is given, and simulation results are showed. Investigation on the Advantages of Quantum Illumination Radar by Using Radar Equation

Rongyu Wei, Jun Li, Weihao Wang +1 more

Quantum radar uses the strong correlations of entangled photons and has a great potential to improve the detection sensitivity. Recently, many research results have been achieved in theoretical analysis and experiments on the performance advantages of quantum illumination radar. However, there are limited researches on its detection range. Based on the analysis of the noise tolerance of entangled state photons, we study the advantages of quantum illumination radar in detection range based on radar equation. It is shown that the detection range of quantum illumination radar is larger than that of classical radar in some regimes due to the strong noise suppression ability of quantum radar.

Sensitivity Enhancement of Quantum Radar Using Entangled Single Photon Source for Military Defense Security

Simanchalo Panigrahi, T Jaganatha Patro

Quantum radar represents a promising advancement over classical radar systems by exploiting quantum mechanical phenomena such as entanglement and quantum measurement to overcome fundamental detection limitations. This paper reviews the evolution of radar technology from conventional radar frequency systems to quantum radar architectures, with emphasis on sensitivity enhancement and detection of RF-stealth targets for military defense applications. Classical radar parameters such as radar range, transmitted power and cross section are revisited and extended to their quantum analogues. The role of entangled single photon sources in improving detection performance under high noise and jamming environments is discussed. Context of microwave quantum radar is reviewed along with photonic implementations. This paper further highlights the importance of quantum measurement theory, including system-apparatus entanglement, density matrix formalism and wave function collapse in extracting information from quantum radar systems. Although significant experimental challenges remain, recent advances indicate strong potential for future development of quantum radar in next generation defense and surveillance systems.

Quantum Radar Through Entanglement‑Based Illumination: A Framework for Enhanced Target Detection

mark harrison, CP Nova

Quantum radar systems leverage entangled photon pairs to detect and identify targets in noisy or cluttered environments with sensitivity beyond classical limits. By transmitting one photon of an entangled pair toward a distant object while retaining its partner locally, the system exploits quantum correlations to improve signal discrimination, reduce noise susceptibility, and enhance detection probability. This paper outlines the physical principles, operational architecture, and performance advantages of entanglement‑based illumination, providing a clear foundation for future quantum‑enhanced sensing technologies.(If you want it shorter, longer, or more formal, tap: shorter paragraph, longer paragraph, more formal)

Quantum Radar: Snake Oil or Good Idea?

Bhashyam Balaji

Quantum radar has been proposed in the quantum information science literature as a novel approach to sensing that can offer a substantial gain over existing, classical sensors. In particular, a quantum radar based on quantum entanglement, termed quantum illumination radar, has been theoretically shown to demonstrate superiority over the optimal classical sensor, and there have been some experimental validation. However, all of the existing literature in the subject is in language, terminology and metrics that are completely unfamiliar (or relevant) to classical radar experts, and as a result there is understandable skepticism among the radar experts. This paper attempts to bridge the large gap between practical radar scientists and quantum information science (QIS) experts working in the field. We review the theoretical state-of-the-art in field and examine some of the claims in the literature in terms of metrics of relevance to radar detection, tracking and sensor fusion. We also discuss some possible technological routes to building such a radar across the electromagnetic spectrum.
