Abstract We have considered and alternating spin- 1 2 /spin-1 chain with nearest-neighbor (NN) (J 1), next-nearest neighbor (NNN) (J 2) antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg interactions along with z-component of the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) (Dz ) interaction. The Hamiltonian has been studied using (a) linear spin-wave theory and (b) density matrix renormalization group. The system had been reported earlier as a classical ferrimagnet only when NN exchange interactions are present. Both the AFM NNN interactions and DM interactions introduce strong quantum fluctuations and due to which all the signatures of ferrimagnetism vanishes. We find that the nonzero J 2 introduces strong quantum fluctuations in each of the spin sites due to which the z-components of both spin-1 and spin-1/2 sites average out to be zero. The ground state becomes a singlet. The presence of J 1 along with Dz introduces a short range order but develops long range order along the XY plane. J 1 along with J 2 induces competing phases with structure factor showing sharp and wide peaks, at two different angles reflecting the spin spiral structure locally as well as in the underlying lattice. Interestingly, we find that the D z term removes the local spin spiral structure in z-direction, while developing a spiral order in the XY plane.

Loss of classicality in alternating spin-21/spin-1 chain, in the presence of next-neighbor couplings and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions
We have considered and alternating Heisenberg spin chain with nearest-neighbor (J1), next-nearest neighbor (J2) antiferromagnetic couplings along with z-component of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya(DM) (Dz) interactions. The Hamiltonian has been studied using (a) Linear Spin-Wave Theory(LSWT) and (b) Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG). We study the ground-state properties of weakly frustrated Heisenberg ferrimagnetic chains with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and two types of alternating sublattice spins S1>S2, using 1/S spin-wave expansions, density-matrix renormalization group, and exact diagonalization techniques. It is argued that the zero-point spin fluctuations completely destroy the classical commensurate-incommensurate continuous transition. Instead, the long-range ferrimagnetic state disappears through a discontinuous transition to a singlet state at a larger value of the frustration parameter. In the ferrimagnetic phase we find a disorder point marking the onset of incommensurate real-space short-range spin-spin correlations.
We study Heisenberg spin-1/2 and spin-1 chains with alternating ferromagnetic (J(1)(F)) and antiferromagnetic (J(1)(A)) nearest-neighbor interactions and a ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction (J(2)(F)). In this model frustration is present due to the non-zero J(2)(F). The model with site spin s behaves like a Haldane spin chain, with site spin 2s in the limit of vanishing J(2)(F) and large J(1)(F)/J(1)(A). We show that the exact ground state of the model can be found along a line in the parameter space. For fixed J(1)(F), the phase diagram in the space of J(1)(A)-J(2)(F) is determined using numerical techniques complemented by analytical calculations. A number of quantities, including the structure factor, energy gap, entanglement entropy and zero temperature magnetization, are studied to understand the complete phase diagram. An interesting and potentially important feature of this model is that it can exhibit a macroscopic magnetization jump in the presence of a magnetic field; we study this using an effective Hamiltonian.

By using the density-matrix renormalization group method, the spin entanglement in the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with the staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions is investigated. It is found that the staggered DM interactions remove the field-induced second order quantum phase transition of the system at the magnitude of magnetic field H=2, and lead to the vanishing of the anomalous behavior of quantum entanglement. Also, the staggered DM interactions eliminate the divergence of entanglement range. It means the disappearance of the factorizing point in the model studied. Due to the presence of the staggered DM interactions, the system will never come to the state of saturated ferromagnetism under finite magnetic fields, thus maintaining the spin entanglement. The staggered DM interactions favor the tuning of the strength and range of spin entanglement.
