Quasiprobabilities Based on Squeezed States

Abstract

This chapter generalizes quasiprobabilities based on coherent states to ones based on squeezed states. Especially, the representation of an operator as a diagonal mixture of squeezed states defines an analogue of the Glauber-Sudarshan P-function. The new quasiprobabilities can be useful tools in describing processes the intrinsic quantum nature of which forbids the existence of the familiar P-function. The chapter illustrates the concepts for a linearized model of subharmonic generation. It is important to express the coherent-state based Q function in terms of its squeezed-state based generalization. The chapter illustrates the squeezed-state techniques for a simple dynamical model of subharmonic generation. It confines to the subthreshold regime where the oscillation, to be down converted, can be treated parametrically.

About the nonclassicality of states defined by nonpositivity of theP-quasiprobability

Alfred Wünsche

The definition of nonclassical states in quantum optics by the nonpositivity of their Glauber–Sudarshan quasiprobability is investigated and it is shown that it hides some serious problems. It leads to a subdivision of squeezed thermal states into classical and nonclassical states which is difficult to interpret physically by some qualitatively different behaviour of the states. Nonclassical states are found in arbitrarily small neighbourhoods of every classical state that is illustrated by a very artificial modified thermal state. The observability of the criterion in comparison to that for nonclassicality of states determined by the nearest Hilbert–Schmidt distance to a class of reference states is discussed. The behaviour of the nonclassicality of states in models of phase-insensitive processes of damping and amplification is investigated and it is found that every nonclassical state eventually makes a transition to a classical state. However, this is not specific for the negativities or singularities of the Glauber–Sudarshan quasiprobability and is found in similar form for other quasiprobabilities, for example, for the Wigner quasiprobability. We discuss in quite general form some defects of the Glauber–Sudarshan quasiprobability if compared with classical distribution functions over the phase space, in particular the failure of an earlier advertised superposition formula.

Series representation of quantum-field quasiprobabilities

H. M. Moya-Cessa, P. L. Knight

The Wigner and Glauber-Sudarshan P functions for quantum fields are usually defined in terms of integrals over the phase space of characteristic functions. We show that they and, in general, any s-parametrized quasiprobability distribution may be represented as a series in terms of displaced number states facilitating a straightforward evaluation.

The Total Gaussian Class of Quasiprobabilities and its Relation to Squeezed-State Excitations

Alfred Wuensche

The class of quasiprobabilities obtainable from the Wigner quasiprobability by convolutions with the general class of Gaussian functions is investigated. It can be described by a three-dimensional, in general, complex vector parameter with the property of additivity when composing convolutions. The diagonal representation of this class of quasiprobabilities is connected with a generalization of the displaced Fock states in direction of squeezing. The subclass with real vector parameter is considered more in detail. It is related to the most important kinds of boson operator ordering. The properties of a specific set of discrete excitations of squeezed coherent states are given.

The complete Gaussian class of quasiprobabilities and its relation to squeezed states and their discrete excitations

Alfred Wünsche

The requirements on the general structure of quasiprobabilities for a single boson mode are investigated. The complete Gaussian class of quasiprobabilities, which can be obtained by convolutions of the Wigner quasiprobability with the complete class of normalized Gaussian functions, is represented by a three-dimensional complex vector parameter with the property of additivity when composing convolutions and meaning that the transition between two quasiprobabilities with the vector parameters r and s is given by the convolution with a Gaussian function belonging to the vector parameter r - s . The scalar product of r with itself is related to the determinant of the second-rank symmetric tensor of the quadratic form in the exponent of the Gaussian functions. This is obtained by a mapping with the two symmetric Pauli spin matrices and the unity matrix. The Wigner quasiprobability takes on the central position within this Gaussian class with the vector parameter r = (0,0,0). The class of s-ordered quasiprobabilities is described by the vector parameters with and its diagonalization is connected with displaced Fock states . The class of quasiprobabilities corresponding to the linear interpolation between standard and antistandard ordering belongs to the vector parameter with . Its diagonalization is connected with discrete series of excitations of the eigenstates of the canonical operators Q and P. The diagonalization of the complete Gaussian class of quasiprobabilities with real vector parameter and leads to dual systems of discrete excitations of squeezed coherent states with mutually orthogonal squeezing axes and properties of orthogonality and completeness and provides a possible generalization of the displaced Fock states. The diagonalization is basically different for real and complex vector parameters r . A generalization of the coherent-state quasiprobability, which uses squeezed coherent states instead of coherent states, belongs to a vector parameter with real and imaginary and and with . New representations of special classes of quasiprobabilities are derived.

Coherent mixed states and a generalised P representation

R. F. Bishop, Apostol Vourdas

The pure Glauber (harmonic oscillator) coherent states provide a very useful basis for many purposes. They are complete in the sense that an arbitrary state in the Hilbert space may be expanded in terms of them. Furthermore, the well known P representation provides a diagonal expansion of an arbitrary operator in the Hilbert space in terms of the projection operators onto the coherent states. The authors study the extensions of these results to the analogous mixed states which describe comparable harmonic oscillator systems in thermodynamic equilibrium at non-zero temperatures. Their results are given for the general density operator which describes the mixed squeezed coherent states of the displaced and squeezed harmonic oscillator. They show how these squeezed coherent mixed states similarly provide a very convenient complete description of a Hilbert space. In particular they show how the usual P and Q representations of operators in terms of pure states may be extended to finite temperatures with the corresponding mixed states, and various relations between them are demonstrated. The question of the existence of the generalised P representation for an arbitrary operator is further examined and some pertinent theorems are proven. They also show how their results relate to the Glauber-Lachs formalism in quantum optics for mixtures of coherent and incoherent radiation. Particular attention is focused both on the interplay between the quantum mechanical and thermodynamical uncertainties and on the entropy associated with such mixed states.

Quantum distribution theory and partially coherent radiation

Marlan O. Scully, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

As we have seen in the previous chapters, there are quantum fluctuations associated with the states corresponding to classically welldefined electromagnetic fields. The general description of fluctuation phenomena requires the density operator. However, it is possible to give an alternative but equivalent description in terms of distribution functions. In the present chapter, we extend our treatment of quantum statistical phenomena by developing the theory of quasi-classical distributions. This is of interest for several reasons. First of all, the extension of the quantum theory of radiation to involve nonquantum stochastic effects such as thermal fluctuations is needed. This is an important ingredient in the theory of partial coherence. Furthermore, the interface between classical and quantum physics is elucidated by the use of such distributions. The arch type example being the Wigner distribution. In this chapter, we introduce various distribution functions. These include the coherent state representation or the Glauber–Sudarshan Prepresentation. The P -representation is used to evaluate the normally ordered correlation functions of the field operators. As we shall see in the next chapter, the P -representation forms a correspondence between the quantum and the classical coherence theory. This distribution function does not have all of the properties of the classical distribution functions for certain states of the field, e.g., it can be negative. We also discuss the so-called Q -representation associated with the antinormally ordered correlation functions. Other distribution functions and their properties are also presented.
