Abstract

Abstract The results of research and development of a high-speed brightness amplifier based on an active medium on copper bromide vapors with a pulse repetition frequency of up to 200 kHz are presented. Operation at such repetition frequency was made possible owing to the mode of reduced energy input into the discharge (less than 60 μJ/cm3 per pulse) by means of shortening the front of the high-voltage pump pulse to 20 ns and the duration (at half-height) to 30 ns.

In this paper the design of high speed brightness amplifiers on transitions of copper and manganese atoms is discussed. A possibility of obtaining images in active optical systems with a brightness amplifier operating at 100 kHz frequency is demonstrated. The results of comparing the images obtained using brightness amplifiers on copper bromide and manganese bromide vapors are given.

Amplified spontaneous emission and superradiant pulse from the flash-pumped atomic iodine system

Gyu Ug Kim, Sang Soo Lee, Jae Won HAHN

A superradiant and amplified spontaneous transition pulse is obtained from an iodine photodissociation laser amplifier which uses i-C3F7I as an active molecule and is pumped with a flashlamp (full width at half maximum=3 μs). We have observed a sharp leading pulse of superradiance whose rise time is less than 50 ns, and the amplified spontaneous emission follows the superradiance during the pumping flash. By measuring the population inversion density in the active medium of the amplifier, we have obtained the threshold condition for the superradiance to take place. Also, the buildup time and peak intensity of the pulse are measured as a function of the flashlamp input energy. By placing a reflecting mirror at a varying distance (from 173 to 673 cm) behind the amplifier, we have found a periodic intensity fluctuation in the superradiance; the period (Δt) depends linearly on the distance (d), i.e., Δt=2d/c, where c is the light velocity.

AbstractResults of the development and study of an image brightness amplifier on manganese atom transitions for problems of object visualization in active optical systems are presented. The possibility in principle of using the developed active element for visualization of objects and processes in two spectral ranges—visible and near-IR—is shown. Profiles of the active element radiation beam at pulse repetition frequencies of up to 100 kHz have been obtained.

Investigation of ASE contribution to copper bromide amplifier output signal

Nikolai A. Vasnev, Maxim V. Trigub

Abstract The paper is devoted to research the single-pass operating mode of active element on copper bromide vapors and time dependence of ratio «signal/ASE». The results show how the single-pass radiation power depends on time delay between ASE pulse and moment when the input signal enters to active element. Light waveforms (ASE, input signal, output signal) are recorded at each time delay. The minimal time delay was 5.2 ns, power radiation in this case was 3.47 W. The radiation power was reducing as the time delay was increased in increments of about 2 ns. The waveforms prove that the active element output signal contains two components: the first – ASE (amplified spontaneous emission), which is formed as result of the active substance atom excitation and their further spontaneous transitions; the second – single-pass radiation amplified by means of inverse population of the active media. The waveforms allow to estimate the useful signal to noise ratio or other words «signal/ASE». The highest gain is provided with the lowest time delay due to the population inversion is maximum in this case.

Spectral composition of stimulated radiation from a pulsed copper vapor laser

Anatoly A. Isaev

An investigation was made of the spectral composition of the spontaneous radiation, superradiance, and laser radiation emitted by a pulsed copper vapor laser. The time resolution was about 3 nsec. It was found that the observed spectral structure of the laser radiation and superradiance was governed by the hyperfine and isotopic splitting of the active levels of the copper atom. In the absence of saturation of the active medium a narrowing of the spectral line profiles was observed during a superradiance pulse. When saturation was achieved for superradiance and lasing, the line profiles broadened to the width of the spontaneous emission line during a radiation pulse. It was found that the temperature of the gas in the copper vapor laser did not exceed 2500°K.
