Critical Phenomena in Systems of Finite Thickness. III. Specific Heat of an Ideal Boson Film

Michael N. Barber, Michael Ellis Fisher

The specific heat at constant density of an ideal-Bose-fluid film of thickness $L=l{\ensuremath{\rho}}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{3}}$, but infinite lateral extent, is calculated analytically to order ${l}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$. Both hard-wall and periodic boundary conditions are considered. Good agreement with the numerical calculations of Goble and Trainor for the total specific heat under hard-wall conditions is obtained down to $l\ensuremath{\simeq}10$. In the critical region, the large-$l$ behavior accords with the scaling theory of finite-size effects. The appropriate scaling functions and the surface specific heat are explicitly calculated.

Floquet-engineered moire quasicrystal patterns of ultracold Bose gases in twisted bilayer optical lattices

Fan, Zhenze, Juan Wang, Yan Li

We investigate the formation of moire quasicrystal patterns in Bose gasses confined in twisted bilayer optical lattices via Floquet-engineered intralayer atomic interactions. Dynamical evolutions of the total density wave amplitude exhibit the stage for the emergence of moire quasicrystal patterns, where the pattern formation is closely associated with the momenta of collective modes excited by the weak periodic drive. Through analyzing the radial and angular density wave amplitude, we find that these new collective modes are only coupled radially and cannot be decoupled eventually. The symmetry of quasicrystal patterns can be easily manipulated by the modulation frequencies and amplitudes. Reducing the frequencies and increasing the amplitudes can both facilitate lattice symmetry breaking and the subsequent emergence of rotational symmetry. Notably, a twelve-fold quasicrystal pattern emerges under specific parameters, closely resembling the moire quasicrystal in twisted bilayer graphene. The momentum-space distributions also exhibit high rotational symmetry, which is consistent with the real-space patterns at specific evolution times. Our findings establish a new quantum platform for exploring quasicrystals and their symmetry properties in ultracold bosonic systems.

Resonances in a periodically driven bosonic system

A. Quelle, C. Morais Smith

Periodically driven systems are a common topic in modern physics. In optical lattices specifically, driving is at the origin of many interesting phenomena. However, energy is not conserved in driven systems, and under periodic driving, heating of a system is a real concern. In an effort to better understand this phenomenon, the heating of single-band systems has been studied, with a focus on disorder- and interaction-induced effects, such as many-body localization. Nevertheless, driven systems occur in a much wider context than this, leaving room for further research. Here, we fill this gap by studying a noninteracting model, characterized by discrete, periodically spaced energy levels that are unbounded from above. We couple these energy levels resonantly through a periodic drive, and discuss the heating dynamics of this system as a function of the driving protocol. In this way, we show that a combination of stimulated emission and absorption causes the presence of resonant stable states. This will serve to elucidate the conditions under which resonant driving causes heating in quantum systems.
