Transfer of Nutating Spin Polarizations between Rb and Cs Atoms

Taro Ito, Noboru Shimomura, T. Yabuzaki

The transfer of nutating spin polarizations between 85 Rb and 133 Cs atoms is observed for the first time. Maximum transfer occurs when the nutation frequencies are made equal in the rotating frames. The nutating spin polarization of 85 Rb atoms is generated by the periodic excitation of the pumping light and the spin polarization transferred to 133 Cs is observed through the Faraday rotation of a probe beam. The observed time evolutions of the spin polarizations are found to be in good agreement with the results of theoretical calculations based on the Bloch type equation of motion including the effects of optical pumping and spin exchange collisions.

Visualization of foreign atoms by optical magnetic-resonance imaging of Cs atoms

Kiyoshi Ishikawa, Satoshi Morii, Katsunari Enomoto +1 more

We perform optical magnetic-resonance (MR) imaging of Cs atoms that are polarized by the transfer from the polarized Xe or Rb atoms in a glass cell as well as by direct optical pumping. With MR images of Cs by alternate optical pumping and detection the distribution of polarized Xe or Rb of low gas pressure is observed in a weak magnetic field. We also discuss the effect of the spin-relaxation and the spin-exchange collisions between Cs, Xe, and Rb atoms on the spatial resolution of MR images of the diffusing Cs atoms.

Observation of magnetization transfer in spin-exchange collisions of cesium and rubidium atoms

Sergei P. Dmitriev, N. A. Dovator, Victor A. Kartoshkin +1 more

Abstract Spin exchange is one of the effective processes for obtaining spin-polarized atoms. Such mechanism of spin polarization is usually used to transmit and observe the longitudinal (along magnetic field) component magnetization of atoms. However, spin-exchange collisions can also lead to the transfer of the transverse component of magnetization, which occurs when the atoms involved in the collisions are exposed to an alternating resonant magnetic field. This article describes experiments to observe the transmission of transverse magnetization between alkali metal atoms 133Cs and 85Rb in spin-exchange collisions. The calculation of the spin exchange in a mixture of Cs and Rb under magnetic resonance conditions gave a qualitative agreement with the experimental results.
